Damn it all. Number 1 child dropped her iPhone in a New Zealand river. (could've killed the stupid boy on the tour with us who threw a rock into the water near her, causing a shock and a drop) Surprisingly, it still worked after the swim. Stupidly didn't backup immediately, or recover the all important photos.

The phone has now decided to crack the sads. There is some life, it will connect to iTunes, iTunes will prompted to update or restore. But the phone just cycles the apple logo when on charge. It also won't update. Meaning restore to factory settings is the next option.
Does anyone have/know:

1) if the restore option will allow a backup before wiping the data, or
2) a way to back up the iPhone, or
3) any software that will allow me to copy the photos from the iPhone.

If you restore you'll lose everything. When plugged into a pc you can usually access the photos via My Computer.

My suggestion is probably coming a bit too late, but it may still be worth trying...
When a phone gets dropped in water, a couple of simple steps will often (but of course not always) bring it back to life:
1. Don't push any buttons.
2. Don't attach any cords.
3. Put the phone into a container with plain dry uncooked rice and leave it alone for 3 days.
4. Cross fingers.
4a. Can pray here if you think it might help [optional step].
5. See if the phone works now...

I've been given a bit more information this morning. The phone was working for 5 or 6 days after the swim, including charging and all that. Daughter then let it run out of battery, kids do these things. Stupid dad's don't back up immediately when the phone is amazingly still working - Learning point.
So the phone is now not charging, which suggests there is zero chance to backup or retrieve pictures.

Phone is now sitting in rice - with praying happening. Fortunately, there is a back up from June. Just the Hobbit holiday pictures that are lost at this stage. But we had 5 cameras on the go, so hopefully there are some replacements available between the family.

Thanks for the ideas.

medhead how far from your local Apple store? They are very helpful and believe me they have seen this 1,000 times before - be honest and just tell them exactly what happened - whatever is salvageable will be salvaged.

Very close to apple store. Just I have 3 days at home in the next 2 weeks. Well actually 3.65 days in 3 weeks. I'll see if they can book a genius bar appointment. I'm not sure about purchasing a replacement, since it is my old 4s phone handed down.

MedHead, I'm interested to know whether you had any luck with your drowned device...
