Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

Nothing appears to have changed, it mentions just points: Purchasing an extra seat

Purchasing an extra seat said:
Can I purchase an extra seat ?

Yes. Call your local Qantas office for more information about purchasing additional seats for personal comfort. Seat belt extensions can also be requested if required.

You can earn Qantas Points for the extra seat subject to current Frequent Flyer terms and conditions.
But, why would it change ...

Re: Buying Two Y Seats Rather a single J Seat

Mine was last year.
Definitely ok at that time.
ADL - MEL - WLG return earnt me Qpoints and QF SC x 4 singles. Myself and comfort occupier.
Would be sad to see the benefit go away.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, so currently QF comfort seats earn points.. yes. SC...maybe, but most likely. Baggage, no? Someone mentioned it changed may 2012?

No experience on baggage side of things...
But I have flown QFi Au - NZ after 2012, and have earnt both my own and my other "friend's" QFF points and QF SC.
The latest was about 2015 I think if I remember correctly.
If they changed the rules after that, then my idea would be out of date, but...
Just on the space factor, and if you can afford it, even if no extra QFF points or QF SC earnt, I would get the comfort seat booking in place.
Being able to lift up the handrest without having a behemoth next to me was a great thing.
Some people on a flight will spread their legs out wide into your space, and hog the arm rest, and then take over your space as well.
Granted that sometimes the comfort seat booking might not work, you get onto the plane and find your request, even if you had bought that empty seat next to you, to find someone in it.

Points and SC, sure. Never thought about bringing extra baggage. In theory, I imagine it would be okay as the comfort seat just removes the taxes on the second seat on account of the taxes applying per person and there's only one of you.

It also removes the fuel surcharges, which I guess go part way to covering the weight of baggage?

You can specifically book additional seats for things like large-sized cabin baggage. Not sure how they price those.

Sorry, not after theory. Need solid experience, recent if possible.

Although i do wonder why people arent doing this on every sc run, esp if they find a good deal below 3 bucks a sc in aus

The ticket will indicate the badge allowance for the comfort seat. IIRC there isn’t a separate baggage allowance stated.

Qantas phone staff may be able to assist you by creating a dummy booking and checking the bag allowance.

Interestingly enough, its confirmed here 100% re SC.

Extra Seat (EXST) for Personal Comfort

Can Qantas Points or Status Credits be earned?
Yes, Qantas Points and status credits can be earned for each seat purchased for Qantas Frequent Flyer members.

Points and SCs are a given... never in doubt (although you may need to call after the flight to get them credited). The luggage is the question here. But QF may need to advise you on that (if they have any idea).

Because on some routes the taxes make up a large component of the ticket = good, but other routes they make up a small component = bad.

I did fly a lot of these, making a large chunk of Platinum from having a spare seat next to me. Flying to nowhere on multiple weekends. Got boring eventually, plus the great deals dried up.

plus the great deals dried up.

What do you call a 'great deal'?
I've been doing a lot around the 3.80AUD mark per SC with UL biz fares this year.
If I found anything in Y below 4aud/SC in Australia, (when I'm back) i'd happily do a SC run + extra seat.

QFLink previously ran sales where I was able to snare seats for anywhere between $59 and $89 each way. I remember flying to Longreach for circa ~$100 return... these days it would be more like $360+ and it's now somehow zone 1!!

My standard run used to be BNE-ROK-MKY vv, sometimes on the same day, for under $300 including comfort seat. This would earn 8000 points and 80SC, at a value of $3.75/SC or less. Looking at prices today the figures seem similar but I only had a small look and flight times did not match as well. I think a lot of people don't take into account hotel stays as part of the overall cost, but it all adds up... day returns were by far the best value.
