SC Run?

Forgot to add: Why pay for part of the flight in cash rather than use the full point cost ie. 16000 points and $67 rather than 22000 points all up?

Is it because the points are worth more than the $67? Math was never my strong suit :P and this seems to be somewhat related to the value of the points and opportunity cost and whatnot..

I'm not sure where the extra 1500 points came from.

I think I've got the hang of the principle of the whole thing now. Basically find flights that route via other cities, ie. don't fly direct and Qantas will credit the points for all the separate legs of the flight. Does that sum it up?

Summed it up perfectly.

My amount was an approximate, but Serfty on here will usually calculate the loyalty bonus included. Every 450SC you gain 5000 loyalty bonus. So 100SC will get you about 1111 bonus points in the long run, and I was probably including a status bonus for a platinum on the syd-hba route which would add an extra 300 or so.

Most people here would place 6000 points at a lot more than $67. At that rate you're getting just over 1cent per point. Everyone has different opinions on what is good but that generally isn't. At that rate the other 16000 points you're spending would be worth <$180 and you can't tell me QF will fly me from CBR to HBA in business for that - let alone economy half the time. That said if you're points rich and don't want to waste cash then it's only 6000 points, but it would be a uneconomical use of them.

Otherwise enjoy, for future exploring try JASA routes out TSV or AKL, I think markis10 found these to be the best. You'd be surprised what & where you can get for not many points in business.

AKL-TSV is probably the best.

I did some searching and I found TSV-BNE to be 23,000 points approx in Y but only 29,000 approx points in J, flying J is a no brainer.

On the Status credits flying J gets you 4 times the benefits, but not 4 times the cost for points, sometimes the points required is 4 times but you just avoid those flights. :p

Indirect flying in J racks up status in no time. I remember once thinking how many countless discount-Y DOM flights I'd need to make PS.

I'm actually flying AKL-TSV in Oct. v/ MEL & BNE thanks to AFF. I only needed to go to BNE but saw that route being discussed on here. Had to pay for a Y ticket back to BNE which was holding me back. I ended up grabbing that in the sale a couple weeks ago which worked out perfectly (no availability on the current sale). Didn't need them, but over 200SC for a days flying aint bad.

Not sure if it's better value than CBR-SYD-HBA... on paper it's close, mostly depends on positioning and where you've got free accommodation ;)

Just trying to work out the whole 100SC each way for ~12000 points and $67, and I think I've almost figured it out... :) Can you check what I'm doing and see if I'm doing it right?

1) Find an JASA flying from Canberra to Hobart, which requires to rout via Sydney. I've found a CAN-SYD-HBA which costs around 22k for a business ASA.

From Baiyun Airport Guangzhou (CAN airport is in China)?

;)

CBR is for Canberra :D

Hehe...i noticed that when I plugged it into mileage monkey, and the map zoomed out and showed somewhere in China for that leg....

quick question...I just tried to book a JASA and I got to the final page(I think it was the final page)..FORGOT to grab the booking reference like a dumbass, and just clicked the Qantas Home link to go back to my account where I thought I would see the booking I had just made on my account.

Couldn't see the booking on my account, and points balance is still the same as before so not sure where the booking has gone. However, when I try and see if the same flights are available, the flights I selected aren't available anymore, so I'm assuming the booking went through somehow and maybe hasn't been reflected on my account..

I called up the helpdesk and asked if they could check if my booking had gone through and they said they couldn't help without the booking reference but they did say that the award bookings take some time to be updated to the account. Is this true, or did I stuff up somewhere?

I've done a couple of these recently so...
The booking should go through right away, maybe not ticketed but it should come up on the QF page and eventually get emailed to you. The points will not be deducted for a couple days.

Maybe you could ring back and ask for your booking reference giving the flight number & date. Once I was waiting on someone to say yay or nay for a booking around midnight at the end of a sale and kept reloading the last payment page so I could put it through straight away. Later I rang to link the completed booking with my own and was told the person was featured 5 times on the inventory so it should be well apparent on their end.

I’ve had cash bookings take hours to post and send an email to me, so it’s foreseeable you could have the same problem with a points booking.

Ooh..I may have jumped the gun there..I just received an email with my e-ticket, so I'm assuming that the booking has gone through, even if my bookings page hasn't been updated and my points balance still hasn't been changed yet. At least now I have my booking reference with me :)

Now, I'm flying CBR-SYD-HBA on the 25th September on a JASA and then flying back HBA-MEL-CBR on another JASA on the 26th of September, which should net me the 180 SCs I need to get to platinum. Thanks everyone for the advice and comments, it helped greatly to help me understand what I was doing :) It should be no problem for me to sort out my work flights that weekend to fly me to Canberra instead of Melb and back again, so I think that's sorted too.

What do you guys do for hotels in Hobart? I arrive at around 4pm and leave at 6am the next day, so I don't need anything fancy, just a place to crash, so any cheap place without bedbugs will do. Is there a hotel near the airport I can just park myself at?

Thanks for that. Right after I read your post, I went back to check and yes, apparently it had appeared on my Bookings page, I just didn't notice it jumbled up with all my other work flight bookings. DOH! I think the worry of it not going through and not seeing my points balance get updated just screwed with my mind.... All good now..also feel a lot better knowing that I managed to get the last seats I could book since the deals with the low point cost that fitted my itinerary have gone now from their available flights page!

Haven't been to HBA for over a year but there was a fairly new hotel within the airport precinct from memory. I would recommend that given the distance from the city, you're talking rental car cost < taxi fares if needing to get to Hobart.

Wotif shows about $100 / night, others might know somewhere cheaper. Don't forget to check out the landside QP, not many of them around these days :)

Thanks for the suggestions mate and the heads up on the cost of getting into the city. Think I'll just end up with the airport hotel, seems ok :)

Wow, this is a really good thread!

I have decided to give UA away (as they're becoming CO (ugh)) and instead aim for gold/plat on QF. I've already purchased several discounted JQ Starclass tickets, so this should round it out nicely.

I've always found Midway Point to be a cheaper alternative.

it said stuff like "there are no direct flights between Sydney and Nadi"

Had exactly the same problem when looking at some options a couple of nights ago. No idea why, I put it down to another quirk of the QF website:rolleyes:

cheers skip
