Scams like these

Two Sundays ago, a guy came around the back of our house clutching brochures of roof tiles. Before he said anything, I told him I wasn't interested. This is how he responded "I am not here to sell you anything but to warn you that we will be working across the road and will be noisy for a few days" in an Irish accent. LOL. The house across the road still with the same roof tiles.

3 calls today from Kaylee from The Product Testing Group. Along the lines, "Would you like to be on our testing panel? We send you out products and you can comment on them. Afterwards you get to keep the products." Me: No thanks. Kaylee: "You have heard of Apple right? We can send you..." Click.
I wonder how many will get caught in this seemingly innocuous scam?

Presumably they build a database of the information they collect from you (name, address etc as they have to "send the products to you") - possibly also try to get CC details from you at some further stage...use your own imagination.

Anybody can build a cople of websites and get Google SEO for a couple of bucks.

This is my guess too. Connect your name and age details with an address etc. They do not need much more to access your financial services. Past 3 days they are now calling 3-4 times a day. When you tell them you are not interested they are very insistent to continue. This is not a normal canvassing call. There is more at stake for them to be so dogged.

That information is already available but they're obviously too lazy to look.

I'll take the free products thanks.

Mate, what I don't understand is why you're using the email address of a hair and beauty salon in Whitman, Mass.

Ah, yes, that's right, you're a scammer :D ;) :p

They were so insistent and called back so many times I was not willing to risk it. It smells like a scam even if they look legit.

Google Street View have been phoning me.

For $330 (inc gst) they will include our building lobby in their next update.

I'm sure it's a scam so you give them address at work and receive free products to test. As soon as they ask for more information pull the plug.

I'm not sure I understand some of the concerns. We sign up for just about everything these days and we provide name, address, DOB, phone at a minimum on most of these sites. Do people think this information is secure and not shared?

Various emails, footytips, supermarkets, hotel loyalty, airline loyalty and all the affiliates, online ordering and much more.

Some banks are now asking trisky questions to identify you such as what was the most recent transaction. Some even have voice recognition. I'm not sure how secure voice recognition is but I'm refusing the option.

A few months ago, I had a throat operation and haven't yet got my voice back. A few days ago, I logged in to iinet where they verify you by asking you to repeat a quote. I was very surprised to be verified as I don't have a voice, just a bit of a croak.

My bank business centre closed a couple of years ago and failed to tell me. Just before Christmas a new business manager took over my account. He called to introduce himself and ask if there was anything he could could do. I rattled off a list of stuff-ups they had made since dumping me. Sure he said, let me look at your accounts. What's your DOB, account number etc. He was a bit taken aback when I said, no you tell me! I wasn't about to give some unknown banker who called me this information. Anyway I didn't bother emailing him until I checked his bone fides at the local branch.

Do Qantas address you by name when the email? I can't recall.

Sender's name is not Qantas, just this bloke - Igor Kwiatkowski

Can't say it's a scam, but can't say it aint.

Hello

I'm very pleased to be joining the Sales and Distribution team at Qantas, leading our valued partnerships with corporate customers, agencies, SMEs and governments around Australia.

Having been with the airline for 18 years, I have seen how innovation and technology has changed the face of aviation and I think we can all agree that the travel experience has never been better.

We have a number of significant projects underway at Qantas, including lounge redevelopments, cabin upgrades planned for our international and regional aircraft and the continued roll out of free Wi-Fi across our domestic fleet. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is now operating in Qantas colours and means we can open up new routes and enhance your onboard experience. Our Dreamliner will make aviation history later this month with the launch of Perth-London flights, the first direct air link between Australia and Europe.

Our teams look forward to keeping you updated on these projects in the coming months.

Thank you for your continued support of Qantas.

Can’t say for sure, but if you’re not being asked to do anything, or click anything, then it’s probably kosher.
If all you’re expected to do is read it, then delete it, then I can’t imagine how ‘the bad guys’ could benefit.
But maybe I don’t have a devious enough imagination...

I don't see it as a scam now, just slack not addressing personally or noting your FF number, etc. Where I see you can get caught with a real scam is when you hit the unsubscribe, contact, etc links.

Slightly different one to me. Selling something rather than giving something. Price appears to be about US$12,000 under todays prices, so a real bargain!
