Scams like these

.......
So sometimes private numbers can be honest.

Yep, sadly - I work for a community housing provider, our lines ring out on private number. 9/10 times we have to ring, then send SMS for client to call back. They usually call back quick, then we let them know re no number for future calls.

Talking about private numbers and SMS, and scams, got one from JBHIFI.
Hopefully Chelzmalee, scammers haven't caught onto your employers name, or that there are code words used in the sms.
Can't remember if I did ever give JBHIFI my mobile phone number, had it since 1999 or so, and yesterday, got a digital receipt.
Haven't stepped foot in a store in a long time, and have always just paid by card.
99% I am sure I ddin't give them my mobile phone number though.
In my case yesterday, it listed private number, so I can't block or trace the call, and JBHIFI was mentioned, with a sus range of numbers, and that I had a digital receipt waitung.
I was at work, so didn't see the SMS when it arrived into "harassment filter".

We may have to ask you to go stand in the corner!

I had been about to say that I had not had any scam e-mails for weeks when I got four today. They were not very convincing ones though as the only words that I could read were "Electric Invoice Package" my name and the supposed sender of FXExpress - everything else was in Chinese characters.

I thought I was getting spam emails from AMEX. The digits on the emails did not match my Platinum card, so I reported them to AMEX.
After several of these messages, and only after checking my AMEX Travel Credits, did I realise the messages were not spam. They referred to an AMEX card that I do not use and only keep (it is complementary) because of the Travel Credits.

PLOT 124 RUE 19 COCODY 01.
ABIDJAN COTE D'IVOIRE.

Greetings,

For sure this mail would definitely come to you as a surprise, but do take your good time to go through it, My name is Juliette Kouauo. I lost my father a year and couple of months ago. My father was a serving director of the Agro-exporting board until his death.

He was assassinated by the rebels during the political uprising in my Country. Before his death, he made a deposit of US$25.5 Million Dollars here in Cote d'ivoire which was for the purchase of cocoa processing machine and development of another factory before his untimely death.

Being that this part of the world experiences political crises time without number, there is no guarantee of lives and properties. I cannot invest this money here any long, despite the fact that it had been my late fathers industrial plans.

I want you to do me a favor to receive this funds into your country or any safer place as the beneficiary, I have plans to invest this money in continuation with the investment vision of my late father, but not in this place again rather in your country. I have the vision of going into real estate and industrial production or any profitable business venture.

I am compensating you with 15% of the total Amount, now all my hope is banked on you and I really wants to invest this money in your country, where there is stability of Government, political and economic welfare.

I will be waiting for your urgent response as to give you more details.

Thanks and remain blessed

Miss. Juliette Kouauo

I got one of these for the first time today on my mobile . A Sydney landline number. The dept of home affairs (USA) are after me, a warrant out to arrest me for not paying US taxes? 🤔. Reported to ACCC scam site.

Yes mine was on my mobile - used to get heaps on my landline when I had one but first on my mobile.

Every few days I'll get a call on my mobile - one ring only then hangup. Sometimes I'll get 2 0r 3 . From very weird sounding places. I know they are robo calls, but what's the aim? To capture my contacts? I don't use my phone for emails so I can't work out what the scam would be

They want you to get curious and call back. Could be for a few reasons:
1. Check if the number is connected and put you on database to harass you in the future
2. Answer you and spin some story because they think you are gullible to call back, saves time/labour to robo you and get you to call back.
3. The number is one of those that charge you for calling back and then by the second to be connected (like cough and advise lines) so they get paid for every callback.

It is usually item 3. Never ring back. They start taking your money as soon as you connect back to them and then try to keep you on the line so the charges just keep on accumulating and then they just appear on your next phone bill.
