Scams like these

I get the Apple and Paypal "your password has expired - click here to change your password" scam quite regularly

'Your Apple account expires in three days' again this morning..i thought it expired a couple of months ago...must be another of my Apple accounts this time.

Or, as the IT guy said on the radio this morning, you get a "bot", and I don't think it stands for your cute bottom. :(

And of course you DID NOT OPEN the attachment.

Being curious most often leads to a virus on your computer.

Unfortunately industry statistics show about 1 in 20 to 1 in 200 under 35s open them. Depending on how relevant and timely it is.

If the email is half decent and coincides with a transaction (especially) then it significantly increases the likelihood of being successful. Some are so bad that they fail and others succeed because people with ESL do not spot some obvious cues.

That is why a number of companies block access to specific high volume legitimate sites as well as all non-company email accounts.

Still enough people make the mistake and make this a multi-billion dollar industry as the recent multi-billion dollar bank hacking revelation recently revealed. They had at least one person per bank click on a link in the last two to three years.

Safest rules:

* If you are not expecting it - don't open it.
* If you think there is a chance it may be legitimate - call the company or the person mentioned.
* Never reply

This one landed in my junk folder - all the links have been taken out:

The spelling mistake, poor grammar and the Spain address at the bottom gave it away ;)

Anyone know what this is? We usually screen the calls that come to the home phone, but randomly, we pick up before the answering machine kicks in. Recently, the phone rings and when you pick it up, it starts ringing at the other end. When that happens, we hang up, but within seconds, it starts ringing again and round and round in circles we go. If you leave the answering machine to take the call, it will only do this twice before stopping.

I'm guessing this is some kind of scam?

Or open it on the work computer. :D

Are you in NSW? Lots of automated political calls already this campaign.

Early election then ;) :D. That sounds like an overseas one where once you answer, it gets routed to the PABX for one of the hordes to answer. I love pressing numbers on the keypad :D

I'm trying to sell my old car on Gumtree. The number of people interested in the car but 'working overseas on an oil rig can I just pay by Paypal' is phenomenal.

I also had the Gumtree one. Pretty funny actually, "I already sent you the money, send x amount back because blah blah blah"

That's just the auto dialler system, I assume. You have to wait for them to answer to find out the scam.

The funniest part of my day, waiting for them to answer. That's one way to make them stop calling :(

Once they answer speak enthusiastically for a few seconds and then say, "Can you hold on a minute, someone's at the door...."

Their time & their money ticks by.

Must say if I'm not doing much at night I can't wait for the phone to ring. Best I have done is just over 40 minutes with the Microsoft guy, the one I had the other night hung up after only 20 minutes. Nothing better than when they start getting angry at you but they just can't hang up.

The latest one seems to be regarding a car accident some time in the past and they are lawyers claiming to be able to expidite your claim. Obviously there is no accident, but you can have some fun with them along the way.
