Scams like these

I used to get cold calls to home landline number requesting to speak with the main breadwinner regarding whatever large company. Telstra, optus etc etc

Our home phone is actually a PABX system so there is a "hold" function where you can put a caller on hold and they can listen to nice music which comes from a simple radio plugged into the PABX. I choose 2CH.

Whenever any telemarketers ring all my family know the routine which is not to give any answers to any questions but to say "please hold the line" press hold and let the caller listen to 2ch. Every 15 minutes come back. Say "yu have progressed in the queue, please continue to hold". Press hold again.

The longest Ive had anyone hold is 25 minutes.
Its a pity I dont get telemarketer call anymore

Rofl ^^^^.

I recall a thread somewhere where the 'victim' insisted on seeing a real person on the net holding, at first, that day's front page of the Nigerian News outside a airport, then the Nigerian was required over weeks to hold a fish on his head etc. I felt sorry for the Nigeran as he tried to make a dishonest living.

and then there is the rumor that if you upset these callers they like to call you back at 2am, 3am, 4am, 5am.

it expends a whole lot less energy just to say 'no thank you' and not run the risk of multiple calls at all hours?

Nope never got calls like these but if I did, its still the same - they get put on hold and they can listen to 2ch. If they hsng up and ring back all they will get is a busy tone

And for those without their own PABX and music-on-hold, the "mute" function has a similar impact - and more boring for the caller.

One thing about all this SPAM is that they are often quite creative. Less and less come with the really odd phrasing and obvious spelling mistakes of the early efforts, while purporting to be from UN officials or UK bankers. But they always seem to have their own "voice" that seems at odds with the signature block. This is another variation:

Good day Beneficiary,

This is to officially bring to your notice that, the investigating bureau have apprehended the officials behind the delay in releasing your Contract/ Inheritance payment. We have been working with these special and trained agents around the globe in order to investigate and find out why your payment of $1.5M USD has been placed on hold for several years.

Some group of corrupt official working with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) the Federal Ministry of Finance (FMF) in West Africa and major banks in the United Kingdom,Canada and Africa, conspired to rip you off your due payment of $1.5M USD with the Central Bank. We have been able to track down 15 officials that conspired in ripping and serphoning your over due payment to their own personal accounts.

The fund will be processed and released to you via Telegraphic wire transfer or via a certified ATM CARD. We urge you to make a choice of payment which you find most convenient and also re- confirm your complete names, address, direct telephone numbers, occupation and a valid ID in order to update your file with the legal processing/payment office.

Finally, we urge you to stop all communication with whom ever you are dealing with at this point for security reasons.

Warm regards,

George O. Oliver

Didn't do a lot of training in English.

I just received a Customer Feedback survey, which appears to be from Holiday Inn Resort, regarding my recent stay at HI coughet. Thing is, my last stay with them was in 2008! Not sure if this is a scam or if they are just really, really slow in sending their emails.

Hopefully the points posted to my account :)

I got a survey from Woolworths Online regarding my "recent" click and collect order. The only order I had done with them at this point was December last year. "Recent" was an exageration in my opinion. It ended up being a legitimate survey but it sounded suspicious initially for several reasons. Maybe the hotel trade have different dedifinitions of recent as well. I can't tell whether your email is a scam either.

We had a weird set of calls last night - we have a silent number and are on the DNC (do not call) register. My wife's mobile rang with a "No Caller ID" about 7.30pm. We never answer those so it rang out. Then our home phone rang and my daughter wanted to answer it and got to the phone before me. I didn't hear what was first said, but as I took it off my daughter I heard "This is an important message for [insert wife's full name], press 1". That freaked me even more, so I did nothing and let is hit the 30 second mark where it disconnected. Told my wife who then showed me other missed calls to her mobile during the day (she was at work and doesn't take personal calls).

Anyone get a similar call recently??
