Sure does look great. 2.5 hours from TOS, how would you get there? Is it on TripAdvisor?

I wish I'd noticed this thread before starting a similar one. I'm going in summer to get away from winter here.

We have chosen one of our hotels in Europe on the last 2 trips using similiar websites for UK and the Netherlands but then checking which had great restaurants.Have enjoyed both immensely.
So I think your method is good.

Apparently it is a 2 hour easy hike :) ... ut.no

Sounds like a a great way to spend a few hours. We were planning on doing a late night visit :( Have some doubts that I'll be able to convince the wife and kids that a winter midnight hike is a good idea. Funny how things work out - we were balking at doing "chasing the lights" tour however, the closure has forced our hand ... so we'll now go ahead and book a tour. Bit of a lottery if you'll actually get to see the "lights" however, they seem to go to great lengths to get the view.

Awesome thread :D

Amaroo, we're doing Oslo, Bergen, Tromso and Helsinki in December so if there's anything specific you want to know I'll be there about a month before you :)

Unsure what we're doing in Oslo but Bergen will be fjord cruise and Tromso will be dog sledding and northern light chasing.

Great offer - I'm all ears! Any chance you can do a TR?

Our itinerary;

Bergen - Norway in a nutshell (whole day, round trip) and probably a fjord or boat trip.

Tromsø - Chasing the light, whale watching or snowmobiling. If you haven't already done it - you'll love dogsledding.

Oslo - a day walking the city before catching a very early flight to Paris.

Have a great trip - may the lights be in your favour.

TR = Trip Report?

Although I am not too sure how much it'll help as I cannot give feedback on quality of the provider but we're going with the Rodne Fjord Cruise (Home - Rødne Fjord Cruise) as they offer a day cruise from Bergen and it runs in the Norwegian Winter. A lot of other cruises I saw did not run in Winter. Also offer a 20% discount if you have a Bergen Card which we're going to use to wander Bergen anyway.

Also we're going Oslo to Bergen via the Bergen Railway which is supposed to be a great way to travel. Actually wanted to drop by Rovaniemi coming back down from Tromso but it's surprisingly difficult to make that trip by bus/rail on the way back down during Winter.

Dates for 2016 (Jan-Apr) have just opened up for booking Norway in a Nutshell - just booked Bergen > Bergen round trip. FWIW - 2 adults and 2 kids = NOK4000

I think the NIAN tours are self service tours and the price is fixed right ? therefore there is no need to book so early in advance ?
going in Sep/Oct 2016.

Correct, tour only in name. It's organised public transport via train, bus, ferry ... I booked early because we've got limited time in Bergen (one day to do this particular thing) and when booking for 4 - I just wanted it sorted. We're going early Jan so it most likely will be pretty sparse in numbers, but you never know.

I am doing a rough plan for my trip here, and want to ask, if you have two extra days, would you allocate to

1. Helsinki
2. Stockholm
3. Copenhagen
4. Oslo

1 day each for 1-4 is fine too !

ideas please.

NiN tickets are much cheaper booked in advance. I'm waiting for July to open. I have been advised to book F class on the train.

W are just finishing a Hurtigruten Bergin Kirkenes return. Fantastic scenery but really only needed to do the northbound 6 day sector to Kirkenes. The meals are very good with fish about 12 ways at breakfast and lunch. Fantastic says Mrsausfox who adores salmon and a choice of different caviar for breakfast but not for myself. There are alternatives available. Ordinary French or Spanish wines are $100AUD per bottle. We saw the Northern lights on 3 evenings and will remember it for the rest of our lives as this was the rationale for the trip.

ALH and others, I'm off to Norway in July OSL. I'll have my Birthday in OSL, on the NiN train and finishing the day in Bergen. A few days later I'll be on the Hurtigruten north. Could you tell me a bit more about this option of cooked meals from supermarkets?

A beautiful part of the world. I didn't drive myself, but the roads weren't busy. I would hire a car next trip. The biggest challenge is Reindeer on the roads and our bus hit 2 at the same time. Both got up and ran away.

Definitely get to Helsinki, and of course day trip to Talin by ferry as well. Much cheaper. Hakaneimi Market Hall in Helsinki had great food. The Suomenilinna Fortesss is worth the visit.

..And as mentioned above, the Vasa museum is REALLY worth the visit! ....Sweden & Norway are very expensive but I bought some good cooked meals in the supermarkets when I didn't feel like a restaurant.

Tell me when to stop..

What's the luggage situation on the trains and buses in norway? Where is it stored? Thanks

It's like most other trains and buses elsewhere. Trains have storage compartments for large luggage in each carriage (often near the doors). Buses have underneath storage.
