I'm going to have my own car so can still just take the ferry over but the choices for Scotland are either late August and early September or early October so just might have to pack the Rid

So I've been advised not to go in June July August because of the midges but I think I'd like to go late August into September - has anyone done that

Well despite the midges https://must-see-scotland.com/midges-in-scotland/ this link also recommends June as best time to visit.

I have just started my planning for a 2 month trip to the UK+Ireland (including Scotland) in 2018 and my initial thoughts are to go May/June-ish. So this thread has been helpful.

That second image in the article seemed very familiar. Just a random piece of road - I didn't go looking for it - but I *had* to stop for this shot.



I wish I'd taken more time. There were plenty more fabulous views around in the Highlands, but I didn't have time to stop driving and take a photo.

Then again, just being there in such incredible scenery was something to cram into my memory and be happy.

I am currently planning to fly out of Ireland (Dublin) due to the extra tax if I fly out of the UK.

ie IN London, OUT: Dublin

So will start in Southern England and work my way up northwards to Scotland and then across to Ireland. So England in May. Scotland and Ireland in June.

I recommend you consider staying at Fonab Castle (Pitlochry), The Dornoch Castle Hotel, Ackergill Castle (North Highlands) and if money is no object, Inverlochy Castle. (GIYF - Scottish Castle accommodation - list of castle hotels in Scotland)

Not sure what things you enjoy doing but I liked Glasgow and really enjoyed the Kelvingrove Museum and the Burrell Collection and need at least three hours at each. Also did the city bus tour which I enjoyed

Not to forget the wonderful Charles Rennie Mackintosh and wife Margaret MacDonald's collections of architecture and design around Glasgow. Margaret's designs in the Kelvingrove are divine and not to be missed. The CRM house at university of Glasgow also worth a visit. The transport museum is also interesting.

My wife and I often like to mix in an extended walk or cycling journey as part of our trips.

We are going to travel through the UK and Ireland for 11 weeks all up next late April to early July and as part of this are looking at some walks/cycling routes in Scotland.

Two that have caught the eye are:

Naturally you can just do segments of either or both.

And, do do a tour or Edradour near Pitlochry. The smallest and one of the most interesting distilleries. http://www.edradour.com/

Their Sauterne barrel matured single malt is close to the best Scottish whisky I've ever tasted. Brought a large bottle home! Annoyed I didn't buy two!
