Scotland on course to vote for independence, poll shows

SCOTLAND is on course to vote for independence, according to a shock new poll that today puts Alex Salmond’s “yes” campaign in the lead for the first time.

The YouGov survey for The Sunday Times shows that the nationalists have taken a two-point lead and are poised to triumph in the referendum on September 18.The poll puts the “yes” campaign on 51 per cent, with the unionists on 49 per cent — overturning a 22-point lead for the Better Together campaign in the space of a month.

The new poll has sent shock waves through Westminster as Tory MPs warned that David Cameron would have to resign as prime minister if Scotland voted to go it alone. Several Conservative MPs are prepared to go public and demand he quit and two Tory ministers have warned colleagues that they would also feel compelled to resign if there was a “yes” vote. Conservative whips revealed they were “aware” that a small number of MPs might seek to use such a crisis to oust Cameron.

Doesn't surprise me.The Yes campaign certainly is more organised.

Will independence have any effect on price of scotch whiskey? Just kidding...

....My (1/4 Scots) prediction is that the No vote will get up even though the Yes appears more powerful. That's the beauty of secret ballots.

Reminds me a bit of the Australian republic referendum (opens old can of worms)....

Totally agree.

I fully support the option that could result in any improvement in the room rates at Gleneagles ...........

Why?
She owns it privately.
The Scottish Parliament has already tabled a report on land reform in Scotland. It has recommended limits on the size of private holdings.Balmoral Estate is the largest private holding so likely to be affected.
Also proposed is removing the fishing rights on rivers and sea frontages which again will affect the royals.
Stems from the fact that about 743 people own 60% of the land in Scotland.Cant find the article I read in June so those figures approximate.

Watched an interesting video on what currency they might adopt and why it's an important question... all that debt and all :p

Good Q - I'll have to ask my old man what he thinks.....he's a tough nut from Greenock.

Caught up with the old man for a Fathers Day bevvy or three - Dad is very much in the NO camp. Probably typical view for many 70+

That story above about Tory MPs wanting Cameron to resign if Scotland secedes made me think it could be a masterstroke by the Conservatives to bolster their power. Scotland wouldn't have too many Tory seats (I can't imagine there are any) so losing all those Labor (and other) seats to another country would make it simpler for the Conservatives to gain a majority in the rest of the country. Or have I got it wrong?

Forgive my ignorance, I thought Cameron was a Tory? It says he's a member of the Conservative party on the internet, which has also been run by Thatcher, who was a Tory. So I'm confused?
