True, yes but that kind of purchase wouldn’t qualify as a spend for the travel insurance to be enacted though. And then you could claim you’d cancelled it post purchase anyway.

We have CC insurance (B.O.M Signature) for our current trip we are starting.

minimum spend is $500 per person / $1.5k for all involved. $1,499 is accommodation, with an online visa making the $1 difference.

Officially we are covered, as we agreed to all the basic conditions. (I also have some pages printed out that relate to internation travel (they also cover cruises!) ), as well as a basic confirmation letter and 2x CC statements as the required proof of purchase (before leaving AU, costs involved related to your actual trip).

That isn’t the issue though. Plus you need to determine if any pre existing medical conditions are covered. And that the total cover is sufficient.

Their issue is that the additional insurance policy that they required states they need to first claim on any other insurance policy before claiming on the additional policy.

What the CC insures for isn’t the OPs query.

"Unlimited, except emergency dental is limited to A$2,000 per person and bed care patiet allowance is limited to a total of A$15,000 (A$100 per day. eg miscellaneous expenses such as phone calls and TV rental).
Note: No cover for pre-existing medical conditions, unless automatically covered as listed in the 'Pre-existing medical conditions' section of this booklet or prior approval given and the administrative fee is paid." (pages 17 - 19 for pre existing rules).

Both husband and I have pre existing which are not covered under CC insurance.
I do think they also take into account if the country you are in , for example England , has a reciprocal agreement with Aust

I take anti cholesterol tablets. Even though I have no other issue, this means basically I am not covered for related health problems via CC insurance whereas paid cover would.

So I don't rely on that for health issues.

But the CC insurance does cover other things, so I have investigated other options.

Insurance via www.auspost.com.au has a basic cover that covers preexisting health conditions such as mine but little else.

But my CC does and the differences are clear with little crossover.

I see a few generalities being posted here that are not totally correct.

CBA offer travel insurance via Covermore.

If you have a particular CC you get the policy free. If you don't have the card then it is a paid policy. It is however exactly the same policy.

For what it's worth we recently had to make a claim against this policy for a lost mobile phone and from claim to payment was under 5 working days. Payment was the full phone value minus the $250 excess.

This was all done online except one query I had and the phone service for that was quick, efficient and Australian based.

If CBA do this then it's distinctly possible that other now do it so it's worth an enquiry.

CBA Policy details:
If you have a Gold, Platinum or Diamond credit card international travel insurance is included

• No minimum spend required simply activate your cover every time you travel#
• Managed by Cover-More, it includes cover for unlimited overseas medical cover for your family
• You also get cover for trip cancellations and delays, lost luggage and loss of income due to disablement when you activate your cover in NetBank~
• Activate and receive a Certificate of Insurance with your unique policy number which will be emailed to your nominated address.

it is my experience that the insurance company:

• requires copies of all relevant receipts to process a claim,
  • in most cases the receipt shows a major proportion (not all) of the credit card number used to make the purchase.
  • The allocation of credit card prefixes and the relevant PDS's are easily sourced from a google search.
  • Thus the insurance company, if they go to the lengths, can be well aware of what CC insurance you have and its terms and conditions.
• most of the T&Cs regarding this matter, in the past, have been merely to dissuade you from even remotely thinking about double dipping. However, that is not to say the situation may not be changing or will not change in the future with some individual companies.
• some specific companies will do anything under the sun to frustrate your attempts to make a claim and make you give up with exhaustion (I'm looking at you QBE) while others are straightforward and honest and process the claim quickly and efficiently. Buyer beware.

The hospital wont treat you without proof of ability to pay i.e. insurance and request permission to treat under the policy.

my american friends say this is simply not true. Hospitals are required by law to treat everyone. Besides if a patient arrives at emergency unconcious and alone, does anyone really think that Triage staff will deny service until insurance is verified.

This is way so many americans get bankrupted over medical emergencies. The hospitals are just stuck with treating people and hope that they pay.
