Seat allocation by status?

I'm VFF Gold recently booked a flight CNS-BNE-MEL as a flexi fare. I couldn't choose anything in row 3-5. I rang up after I booked and asked if I could select seat 3A on both flights and it was done.

That's good to know. I will give it a try I think.

So I tried seat selection on an upcoming flight, and despite me being in an economy booking (VA Gold), it showed 2F as available to me on 73H. I tried to select it but got the seat selection unconfirmed message. I then realised that I could actually checkin for the flight. During checkin it let me select 2F. It let me checkin and I printed of the boarding pass. It shows the seat as class as 'S' and the Seat as 2F. My understanding is the first two rows are business class - it showed them as 2+2 instead of 3+3. Is it really going to let me sit in business just because I selected it?

Where is the flight to. There are a number of ports eg LST that virgin don't fly business to.

Oh, I thought all their planes had business, and the seat map shows it as 2+2 for the first two flights.
The flight is CFS - SYD..

Ah, but you're right. They don't sell business class for this route.

I was able to select two business class seats yesterday on an E-190 KGI-PER. Row 2, Service was def. Economy though. Yoghurt and a biscuit for breakfast same as every one else, I'm Gold. nice flight too :)

I believe all the domestic Aus 737's and e jets have business seating now but the service isn't sold on all sectors. If that's the case I believe WP's can select the J seats at booking

Couldn't select J seat on flight that doesn't have J service today, but lounge angels fixed it up for me :)

Looks like Gold can select at Checkin (but not all J seats were selectable).

That was my case yesterday. Business not sold, but 1 seat selectable at check in (on Saver Light). The lady next to be was Silver on a Flex ticket, and the seat was allocated to her without her selecting it. Only 4/8 seats were taken, and definitely no J service.

Hmm so maybe they allow half for lower statuses and restrict the rest for Plat? Could you only see one as SG or you just saw the other passenger check in?

I could only see one during online check in about 40 hours out. The lady next to me just told me she was surprised to get this seat as she was only silver and that's what they gave her. Only one guy was in the front row, and looked like he expected to be there. The fourth person was in the 2nd row as well, and surprised at his 'upgrade'.
