Seat Angels

Has anybody acted as a 'seat angel' by anonymously trading their business class seats with a passenger in economy?

Sometimes we end up with a premium flight. That we don't value particularly highly. But that someone else would value highly.

Without giving up much, and without spending money unnecessarily, can we brighten somebody's day who perhaps has never flown business?

There may be circumstances that are conducive to gifting premium seats to a random / worthy passenger such as:

* Frequent / high status flyer is in short haul biz (eg golden triangle)
* Has been on enough flights that 90 mins day biz / econ doesn't move the needle (not exciting, won't eat the meal etc)
* Has already purchased biz ticket optimally eg:
1. Company paid for flight
2. Purchased multi-leg biz and mostly only want the flatbed for overnight, but happen to have short-haul domestic connector
3. High demand periods sometimes WP econ redemption unavailable, but biz redemption is available and still cheaper than rack rate econ
4. Status upgrade (operational upgrade)
5. Status run with many meaningless domestic biz legs
etc
* Either doesn't care much for domestic lounge or can get free lounge access anyway (through WP, QC etc)

Execution / Logistics

How might this be executed?

* Would it be officially through QF gate staff, or can you do it directly person-to-person?
* Would we need to nominate someone, or can we have the gate staff randomly assign it (to remove personal bias)? For example, could just say '13th person to go through check-in'
* Would we nominate this at checkin or at the gate?
* Do we favor particular demographics (solo traveler, elderly, disabled, low QF status etc) or just let fate run its course without imposing our own biases?
* Legally / liability standpoint do gatestaff need to change the ticket in the system or will they be OK just letting passengers informally swap seats?

Corporate vs Personal

* Could / should Qantas or other airlines adopt this as a business strategy?
1. People are generally quite excited by lotteries
2. Goodwill branding to advertise as 'seat angels' rather than eg 'upgrade lottery'
3. For example randomly upgrading eg 1 Y -> J on every flight. Like meter maids in Gold Coast
4. Could be +EV (+$) corporate strategy as imagine customers may overvalue the lottery payoff (eg they'll pay $20-$50 more to fly QF vs JQ when the EV of the upgrade may only be $5-$10)
* Is corporate involvement desirable, or better to execute person-to-person directly? If the intention is to brighten somebody's day / inspire a sense of 'random acts of kindness', coughising it with corporate stain may detract from this
* Pros / cons of being anonymous?

Further Ideas

Any similar experiences / ideas to add?

Obviously not under the impression that this is like 'saving starving children in poverty', however it does seem like an almost costless to do a random act of kindness, from time to time

It’s a ‘thing’ in the US… quite a few people give up their seat in first class to those travelling to or from active military duty. They either offer their seat at the gate, or offer it to a person in uniform as they are passing their [first class] seat.

I don’t believe there are any legal issues, the swap just happens. Quite often the cabin crew will acknowledge the swap and give the ‘swappor’ a free drink or snack.

With a list of criteria I don’t believe an airline could actively participate given privacy issues. They wouldn’t be able to tell you who has status or not. And of course not having status on one airline doesn’t mean thou aren’t top tier on another airline. I wouldn’t expect gate staff to select randomly, either. It would put them under additional strain at an already very busy time. For example, what if ‘random person 13’ was travelling as a couple, or has selected a seat close to the WC to meet their needs?

If you are doing a swap you might let the crew know, so when it comes to service they don’t address the passenger by the wrong name.

While I agree a very frequent flyer may not appreciate the benefits such as a meal in business class, I haven’t met a person who doesn’t appreciate the space. No one really likes sitting shoulder-to-shoulder jammed in in economy class.

Hey - I think this is a nice idea but can't see how involving crew would be workable. Maybe just approach a random person at the boarding gate; e.g. solo traveller, person with infant, etc As @MEL_Traveller said I have seen this practice in the US (usually with someone in military uniform).

Test run this morning QF429 SYD -> MEL

Airport very busy with footy finals so didn’t want to interrupt gate staff

After boarding asked biz FAs if they could help. Seemed genuinely surprised / happy to help, however also understandably weren’t prepared with a method to randomize recipient

So, awkwardly intercepted someone as they were boarding. Not smooth logistically…room to improve

Next test in 2 days will attempt to intercept directly earlier (check-in counter or gate)

Would prefer if it could all happen anonymously (in the system)

I get what you are trying to do. But please don't.
Staff can't just downgrade and upgrade in the system

I like the idea of this in theory (admittedly I'm no where near the frequency of the novelety of business wearing off so I'm unlikely to do it myself). If I was to do it I think it would have to be up to my discreation and after running it past staff beforehand. If you wanted to make it random another option could to swap with the person behind you scan.

I couldn't see how this would work as you would need to have someone who is prepared to be downgraded on every flight, hypothetically if I was the one was downgraded involuntary I would be pretty annoyed
 
(somewhat related)...some years ago I was sat in J on a domestic flight. The last person to board was someone with no legs, and they were wheeling themselves on a (sorry, I don't know the correct terms) skateboard type of thing. I WANTED to immediately get up and offer my seat, but the shock of it all just left me sitting there like a stunned mullet, and I did absolutely nothing. I still feel guilt about it.

If there had been a way to offer my seat without me or them or anyone feeling awkward or apologetic, or doing the "are you sure, really sure" dance, I hope that I would have done what I failed to.

I'd say this practice is so unusual in Australia that it could end up putting his name on some sort of watch list. Moving PAX around so that someone from up back is now adjacent to the coughpit.

I could understand the crew finding this odd.

To clarify, corporate angle was that QF just upgrade someone randomly

For example if there are 6 unsold J seats, instead of upgrading 6x based on status algorithm, could do 5x based on status algorithm and 1x seat angel (lottery)

This feels like one of those "challenges" that "content creators" do to "randoms" in the street. I'd look around to see if I was being filmed.
Besides, if a random pax would come at the gate to ask about my seating arrangements or whether I'd want to swap, I'd rather keep very low profile about my seat allocation and refuse to share any info on which seat they'd be receiving. Plus, if a meal is included in the flight, my order would get lost (which creates unnecessary hassle for the FA's).

I love the the generous nature of the idea. But perhaps it'd have easier environments somewhere else for the implementation.

People already pay this QF premiums for the opportunity to use QF points to upgrade. I think any further EV from the chance of a single free upgrade on a flight will not make up the shortfall in lost revenue (either cash or points)

I can't see this idea taking off personally. There's nothing in it for QF, but you need their involvement for this to work without awkward situations.

I'd be more interested if Qantas offered skipping a meal via pre-book, then donated a meal (or two) to charity. This might actually change the life of someone in need and would be far easier to administer.
