Did we clear up why OP's companion was charged though? As SG I can bring my NB partner with me on the same PNR to any seat available to me as gold - all the way up to row 4 at T-80

Yeah probably the worst row on the aircraft and Qantas say it's preferred...gotta laugh.

Except in preferred rows. Only the gold member gets free access to the preferred row. The no status companion has to pay.

Only QF could come up with an enhancement where row 9 is a “preferred” row costing money and rows 4-8 are gratis - albeit at T-80
