Seating on air NZ codeshare

I have a flight from Christchurch to Brisbane next week on a VA flight number operated by ANZ. I was able to select seats when I booked and don't want to get stuck in the middle. I am a VA Platinum.

Does any one have any recommendations on getting a reasonable seat?

Our corporate travel arrangements often result in me being booked VA flight on Air NZ metal and I similarly find that seating selection is not available online - I simply ring Air NZ, armed with the relevant seat map for the flight from Expertflyer or similar, advise them of the issue and VA Plat # and they are always most helpful in selecting the desired available seat. As a VA plat, I find that most of the seating is available.

Air NZ told me that the assignment was requested but will confirmed at the airport. Fair enough, but how good are they in keeping the 'requested' seat?

My first time on Air NZ in years and back then I was star alliance gold. I can't handle middle seats!
