Security Incident on JetStar Flight at AVV

It’s not unusual for no police to be present at the smaller airports - this might be rethought now - or at least changed to cover flight times.

It’s been a long running fight between Hobart Airport and the Federal police after the Federal police gave up about five or six years ago, even when the seasonal international flights run. HBA is#8 busiest in n Australia. Tasmania police do patrol the airport but I don’t think it’s full-time.

Why Jetstar flights specifically?
JetStar tends to fly to/from ports are less popular and may have security concerns like Avalon. Indeed, JetStar appears to be the sole operator out of Avalon which means that they in theory would have more sway on airport operations compared to a major port like Brisbane or Tullamarine. It will be interesting to see what Jetstar and the airport authorities do to bolster security here.
From the airline’s perspective, I think the actions of the crew (along with the passengers) yesterday demonstrated an exceptional level of competence.
Completely agree here. All it took was a couple of heroic passengers and crew to potentially save the lives of many. I am not an expert in firearms by any stretch but I could imagine that discharging a firearm in a confined space like an airplane would only result in mass casualties.
The security of the airport, not so much.
Certainly a security review needs to be done for Avalon. Although one does have to wonder whether it would have been any different at Tullamarine or Kingsford Smith. For instance, could someone cut through one of those fences and make their way airside as seems to be the case with this Avalon incident?
The poor boy needs mental health help. I'd guess autism or a psychosis and will put money on that he won't go to prison because that is not where he needs to be. Show some compassion AFF!
I think the better question is how a teenager could posses such a weapon. Perhaps I am missing something here but it is my understanding that Australia has some of the toughest firearm laws in the world, and one would presume that they wouldn't just give a firearm to a teenager like candy.
Avalon certainly isn’t a “major Melbourne airport” it’s a regional airport at best, there’s a handful of flights a day.
I was under the impression that Avalon was a fairly busy airport with international departures and arrivals. The only time I visited the airport (during COVID in 2022) it wasn't so busy, but was a decent size airport.
Unlike most regional airports Avalon covers a large land area with lots of commercial activities around the airport, finding a way through to airside really wouldn’t be difficult.
Hopefully there is a rethink of perimeter security at the airport.

Linfox might want a few more security guards.
An important question for which I don't have the answer to is what jurisdiction Avalon airport falls under. Would it be the state police (since it is in Victoria) or Federal police (since it is an airport that conducts inter-state and potentially inter-national flights)? What I do find interesting was that it took 10 minutes for police to show up.

No scheduled international flights since AirAsia left several years ago

Probably VicPol, I believe that the Commonwealth Airports Act doesn't apply to Avalon.

There might not even be many domestic flights there for much longer, as when Jetstar was last threatening to cease servicing AVV in 2015, they eventually were able to obtain a government subsidy to continue operating 7 daily flights for another 10 years:

That agreement announced in April 2015 would have to be coming to an end soon, and Jetstar hasn't increased their service level out of AVV beyond the agreed 7 daily flights, which gives me the impression it still may not be performing particularly well.

Victoria's current financial situation at the moment would imply there is far less public money to go around for anything not completely essential now compared to a decade ago.

Swans lost last night
Sorry when I went to bed the match was still going and the swans were surging. Must check before posting but with my CRAFT that isn't going to happen unfortunately.

The boy allegedly stole at least one weapon from Tourello, which is just south of Maryborough (Victoria) on the Ballarat-Maryborough rail line.

Maryborough is one of Victoria's most disadvantaged communities.

Avalon did play host at various states to AirAsia and Indonesia's Citilink but Jetstar is currently the only operator, and only flies domestically to/ from it.

They just launched a BNE flight so I doubt they will pull out.

If anything, remove the crew base and use aircraft from the other bases. Sydney 3 daily would suffice. That pulls out a bit of cost.

And they've continually tried to get the government to build them a railway station (the airport is within a few km of the Geelong line)
I still have my money on Avalon getting a train station before Tullamarine ever does. Way too many taxi touters and special interest groups preventing a rail line to ol Tullamarine. Oh well at least they don’t have curfews!

They might explain why the airport offered what deemed like a generous offer to the hero, a lifetime flight pass out of AVV. Well its lifetime but that lifetime only lasts a few months. Well at least he’ll get the same feeling of would be Singapore PPS Solitaire lifetime members.

I wonder how they make the determination. Is it passenger volume or simply whether interstate or international travel is involved. Over here in Canada, the local transit agency (Windsor transit) is Federally regulated simply because they have 1 bus route that crosses an international border (the Detroit/Windsor tunnel bus)

Presumably such weapons must be secured which bed the question why they were not.

Surprised the budget international airlines aren’t coming back. Avalon ain’t a bad airport. Sure it’s not big or have fancy lounges but it gets the job done.
Really is a bit of a white elephant.
There was a period where some incentives were being offered for freight to move down there but all scoffed and even laughed at the idea
They clearly haven’t flown out of Lord Howe Island or Longreach.

What I will say about Tullamarine despite the homes I often crack about its abysmal transit situation is it’s the best airport Australia has. Very well designed in many respects. For instance all the terminals are connected to each other making transit a breeze. The lack of curfew is another gem. Oh and the Qantas First lounge is better in Melbourne than Sydney too!
