MEL_Traveller is correct in what happened to me, although one of the refused passenger's middle name was only 3 letters so I'm not sure if that part is 100% correct.

you are right. There is a qualification on the '3 letter' rule. It obviously can't completely change the name. Which is how the airlline might have viewed this particular situation :(

I think it's more just that MU won't accept any changes on a ticket booked via another airline.

Most airlines won't accept changes on tickets issued by other airlines (or travel agents). They'll always refer you back to the issuer.

But the issue of a name isn't to do with accepting changes. If the name error was less than the three letters, or sometihing like a missing middle name, it wouldn't be a case of changing the ticket - they'd just allow you to fly.
