SHAME Virgin -- Memo to the brass - COVID is still out there. [Wear Masks!]

Even 1 death needs to be investigated and measures put in place to keep people safe.

But are you going to do that for all causes of death?

Also need to keep in mind, many of the covid deaths reported are people dying of other causes, that happen to have covid. People have been in car accidents and the death has been recorded as a covid death. Same goes for hospitalisation - they've made it quite clear many of the hospitalisations are to treat other conditions, not covid.

For your first point why not? Life is precious. I think somewhere along the way our selfishness has got in the way. Civilisation is all about coming together and taking care of each other.

For your second point I agree to a certain extent. They've been falsifying some of the numbers but even if covid deaths were somewhere between 250K-600K per year worldwide it's still a serious issue.

I've had diabetes for 20+ years. I'm ok. I've also got immune issues. I'm ok. I'm still alive. If I get covid and die it is covid that killed me not comorbidities. That's the easy cop out.

Many of the posts in this thread seem to me to have veered off topic and to be venting general libertarian anti-mask rhetoric rather than addressing the issue raised in the original post - which was about the non-implementation by some cabin crews of the mandated wearing of masks on flights.

Whether you agree with it or not, it is a condition of carriage, and I think a legal requirement, that passengers wear masks while flying.

There are a number of laws and regulations that I don't agree with, but I accept that in both my private and professional life I am required to abide by them. I would argue that the same goes for us all.

Civil disobedience is arguably justiified in the cases of severe injustice, such as racial segregation in the USA in the 1950s, but that doesn't justify people in general picking and choosing which laws/regulations they do or do not choose to obey.

But it's also a reminder that governments don't have absolute power - they should only be making laws/regulations that are necessary and can be enforced.

The PM was on "The Project" the other night, and basically admitted most people don't follow the public transport mask mandates and "what are you going to do? arrest them all?". Of course not.

This is an example where the government (I guess plural including states) have failed to lead. The difference between leadership and management is bringing people along with you, not just making arbitrary laws. People followed in 2020, and to a lesser extent in 2021. In 2022 they're asking why their bus with 13 people on it is more dangerous than the night club they spent 5 hours at the night before.

I'm not condoning disobeying the VA/QF mask rules (at the end of the day they can set their own rules above the government's) - but completely understand why everyone is getting jack of them.

You make some valid points.

Of course, there's a world of difference between choosing to go to a nightclub (where you won't see too many immuno-compromised seniors) and travelling on public transport (where many seniors have no alternative) - but your point is well made, and as such taken.

Perhaps it'll take a few more thousand deaths and hospitals getting to code red or worse before people reconsider.

I regularly catch route 373 in Sydney - Taylor Square to Coogee - going to work. I am usually joined by six staff finishing shift at St Vincent’s Hospital which is a major hospital in the area.

None of the six nurses (I know they are nurses as they talk about their job) wear a mask on the bus.

Given that hospitals have significant numbers of cases I’d feel considerably safer if they masked up. I wear a mask but when they get on board I sit as far away as possible!

These are the healthcare workers that we locked down in 2021 to protect. I’d appreciate it if they did their part too.

Anyway, back in topic.

Flew VA into BNE last night, amazingly really because flight was cancelled then new flight was delayed :)

Everyone was wearing masks to begin with but then after a few people ordered some cola and chippies they didn’t go back on. Staff did not reinforce mask wearing and the cabin manager had their very loose mask hanging under their nose too.

I know I didn’t say anything so technically I’m complicit but these days it’s such a lightning rod for an arguement….

And I go back to my point. Why stop at just “masks”.

Healthcare workers wear N95 when tending to covid positive patients because they are superior to general masks. So why stop at the general masks?. Why not enforce masks wearing the entire flight.

In other words why mandate a partial measure?. Is it because it is more difficult to enforce the stricter/or more draconian it is?

In spirit yes….but in reality HCW at the peak invariably said they were not well supported/protected.

Covid is endemic. If worried wear an N95/even a face shield

Cabin manager on an OOL-SYD flight on Thursday wore his mask below the chin for the entire flight. Not a good example to others.

Has anyone actually seen crew tell passengers off for not wearing it though?
