Sharing Business seat with Economy passenger on Finnair

No, I've done something like this before. I swapped places with my travelling companion and took her Y seat IST-LHR on a BA A321 or something while she rode my J. I was doing a DONE4 and let's face it not missing out on much on a regional flight; the J seats are basically Y rows with the middle seat blocked off.

I got the points.

And the vegetarian meal she'd ordered. ***SIGH***

I don't expect much of BA but one thing seems to hold true: they look after their elites. As a WP in Y I'd get the old little perk and once a fairly hefty upgrade LHR-JNB for the two of us. Best benefit ever was that Iceland volcano thing. I was in Istanbul with my wife when that blew and our flight to AMS via LHR was cancelled. They cancelled all their regular pax and put me as a WP (and my wife NB) on a Turkish Airlines flight into Schipol just as everything in Europe closed down for a week. That saved me a LOT of money and trouble.

Interestingly normally they retire a flight number after an accident. However TK1951 flight IST-AMS still uses the same flight designation as the crashed TK flight.
Of-course no chef on BA, but carried on TK from IST to Euro destinations.
 
The 2 upgraded were friends and only the 2 women asked for the upgrade initially. It may have been there plan all along to then ask about the men as I would imagine upgrading 4 at one time would be unlikely to be considered.
 
The question is why do you feel this way? Would you feel the same way if the other person was male?

Sucks to be her but thats on her employer/their policy for putting her on a 14hr flight in Y.

I’m with you. People make life choices and follow different paths/ book seats appropriate to their circumstances. No need to feel guilty you made better/different choices.

OP is not feeling guilty but utilising positive personality traits regarding helping old friends and sharing of resources. I reckon if he explained the situation, the CSM would be quite amiable or even impressed by his altruism and upgrade his friend.

Yes indeed. My choice as a frequent flyer is not to get locked into rat race of status with a particular airline and fly with who gets me there when I want to go there. I pay for what I want when I want.

Sorry if that's not your choice.
 
Of course you can share. The business class passenger can go aft, but not the other way around.
 
I remember Jennifer Aniston switching from first class Emirates to economy, with a total stranger and it all seemed hunky-dory with the staff. So I'd think you'd have precedent on your side.
 
Also depends on what your racial ethnicity is - call me sensitive if you want! Wifey and I had J booked in Air Canada SYD-YVR, 15 y/o kiddo had Y. I asked if we can swap, they said yes - NOTE, I didn't even want to swap midway and never asked for it! So wifey and kiddo travelled J and I travelled Y (12.5 hour flight). ONCE, only once, I went up to check and say hello, but the way male cabin crew spoke to me - rude, obnoxious, tersely told me off saying "ok, quickly say hello and get back"! Wonder if he would treated a white person differently? May not have allowed them to swap (or may have, going by the above narratives!), but at least cheerfully and cheekily made sure I went away!

Some years ago my wife was flying with Singapore Airlines in Suites, Paris to Singapore. Her sister, her niece and several of her children were on the same aircraft in economy.

Shortly after take-off, my wife asked flight staff if she could swap seats with her sister. She said her sister would never get the chance to fly in Suites and this would be a wonderful opportunity.

They replied that, to the best of their knowledge, no one has ever done this but, if her sister agreed, they would allow the change.

The swap took place and a short time before the plane approached Singapore, the flight crew from Suites came down to the economy section with a surprise birthday cake.

My sister-in-law had informed one of the flight attendants that it was my wife’s birthday. The flight crew and a good number of passengers chimed in and sang happy birthday to my wife.

It was a good pay back by her sister and my wife was overwhelmed with the actions of the flight staff.

So yes, if you gain permission from the flight crew, it is possible. But as the flight attendant advised, it was a most unusual gesture on my wife’s part but one they enjoyed equally as much as did her sister.
 
There was some comment about disturbing PAX during the switch mid-flight. But surely that could be no more disturbing than a PAX going to the bathroom? Who returns to the seat should cause no more inconvenience. And familiarising with the technology is again no more inconvenient than a restless J PAX playing with the controls.

Well, an upgrade would be nice but upgrades are in the lap of the gods. Like the weather; it happens or not and there's not much control over the situation. Even when submitting upgrade requests it's a bit of a gamble.

I've swapped my J seat with a Y passenger a couple of times in the past. Once on the old QF63 when it was a 744. I was travelling with my wife somewhere. For me it was the tail end of a DONE4 and we shared legs. I got the CBR-SYD up front and she had the SYD-JNB leg. No problems, just tell the staff what we're doing.

Letting my friend have the first half of the flight minimises disruption, I think. Playing with the controls is one thing, but trying to recline a no-recline seat could be tricky. Best to sort that out with the lights on and FA assistance on hand. I've flown on these seats before - and in fact will have just flown up from SYD in one - so I know how everything works.

My thinking is that J pax are able to go back and visit the Y cabin and she can have a solid sleep and do just that, waking me - hah! - halfway through the flight, and then I am just a J pax returning to his assigned seat, BP in hand. So long as the cabin crew know what's going on there should be no problems.

On that note. I have a strategy. My SYD-SIN leg is in J on one of the Finnair wet-lease aircraft. I think that once there's a quiet time after the meal service, if I poke my head into the galley, a pack of Ferrero Rocher in hand, then I can ask about the Finnair policy on mid-flight swaps. I should be able to get some current and useful information to inform my next step. These will be Finnair cabin crew, routinely assigned to premium cabins, and most likely they rotate through the system, maybe working the SIN-HEL leg the next day after a rest. They will know what goes on, what's allowed, what my chances are.

In SIN, I can approach the staff at the gate lounge desk prior to boarding and inquire, based on what I've already learnt, possibly with a pack or two of Tim Tams at my disposal.

I really can't see how there could be any problem in merely swapping seat assignments for the whole leg. I'm actually prepared to let her have the whole flight up front. After all, I get the points and the credits and we'd be in the same position on arrival as if I'd done nothing, just with the roles reversed.

The tricky part will be the bold mid-air transfer and I think some chockie bickies might smooth the way.

Irish were MAJORLY not happy. Have to bring double quota (maybe double-choc) next time.
