Shooting through to Kakadu

Moving on another c. 60km SW to Maguk/Barramundi Gorge. A couple of km walk to the pretty pool and falls for a swim.

After lunch, moving on to Katherine Gorge/Nitmiluk NP.

The private camp owners where we stayed have built a deck and obtained a liquor license for sunset view sundowners. They were also doing a roaring trade in fresh-cooked pizzas. They do the catered sundowners twice per week; otherwise it’s take your own drinks and snacks.

Next morning a boat cruise in Katherine Gorge. There are three gorges separated by the need to walk a few hundred metres to join the next boat. As the water level was receding, the third gorge excursion had recently closed so we just did the lower two.



A large colony of flying foxes near the main jetty.



A pair of sea eagles with young in their nest on the opposite side of the river.



A good-sized freshwater crocodile across the way.

Edith Falls in Nitmiluk NP for lunch then it was time to head back to Darwin, with a stop at Adelaide River on the way.

The Adelaide River Inn is an interesting oasis-like spot. Amongst other quirky memorabilia the ‘303 Bar’ contains the stuffed water buffalo ‘Charlie’ who was ‘hypnotised’ to sit in ‘Crocodile Dundee’. Perhaps apocryphal, it was a subsequent addition to the first film after main shooting had been completed when the producers found out about it.

Adelaide River was a major military base during WW2.

Arrival back in Darwin at about 1700h. Time to chill before dinner and then out to DRW for a noon flight to PER next day to finish a great short trip.
