Should I bother to collect status/FF points?

Just booked Bne> Sfo with Air New Zealand.
Great price and seems a good flight.
For an annual int J flyer, is there any point in collecting the airpoints ?
I used my velocity # in the booking but assume there are no crossover arrangements.
We harvest a steady stream of qf points, but status ebbs and flows making the value questionable.

I joined airasiana for my trip on Air New Zealand this year.
You have 2 years to get status which may be helpful.
Up till now I have used OW airlines and struggled to get status as I mostly do either a european or north america paid J and a japan PE flight each year.

In general it can't hurt to collect miles. Maybe not in Air NZ's program, but somewhere at least. Even a tiny amount of 'orphan' miles can come in handy. An example was a trip I did last year on Oman Air, credited to Etihad. The 12000 miles got me an AA domestic ticket in America for a 90 minute flight that is currently AUD750 - and that's economy! So you never know when these things can be useful.

Well I recently had 2 short Y flights on AC and UA.I posted them to Avianca mainly because that means with their new expiry policy I don't have to buy miles for the next 12 months unless I want to.

My understanding ( what little I have ) was/is that they are not tradable or creditable to another programme ,hence my question.
On their own they can be used on other partner airlines, however the likelihood of that is remote
There is no cost so I incline to gather them but was wondering ………..

The only tradeability of miles, given you mentioned Velocity membership, would be if you joined Krisflyer (Singapore Airlines) and then did a transfer @ 1.35:1 Effective earn on business class is 0.925 Velocity points per mile flown. BNE-AKL-SFO is 7944 miles = 9930 KF miles = 7355 Velocity points.

Otherwise people have mentioned Avianca Life Miles, as you earn at 2 miles per life mile and can then top up to get a desired award usually at somewhere between $13.50-$15 USD per 1000 miles. You would earn ~ 15,900 miles, so to top up for a one way business class to Asia (if you can get seat) would be ~$700 AUD.

NZ Airpoints are not a great value 'currency' and even more so in small numbers
Airpoints arent tradeable but if its an NZ flight with an NZ flight number you should be able to credit to any of the Star Alliance partners by entering that partner's FF number.

The ability to credit non-trans tasman NZ flights direct to Velocity ends on 1st November I believe. [Edit:digging around, it looks likely no crediting at all to VA from 27th Oct]

wheretocredit.com is a good resource

SQ is a reasonable option as you can top up with many credit cards. There is an expiry but if all else fails you can transfer to VA (at a 1.35:1 cost)
