I know first hand of other instances where this has occurred but where the outcome has not been as dramatic.
Part of the explanation comes from the fact that, for a turbine at high power, a small engine speed adjustment is a very large power adjustment.

That i was aware of, but a 100t difference in weight i thought still would have been the difference you would have noticed, felt etc. I only know props so no experience on jets at all so very simple for me to say without knowing i know.

I understand and agree and my thoughts are the same as yours. The feedback I have is from some CX and QF longhaul pilots who were actually talking of their experiences and how it was possible for this to occur.
