Flying J to London in a couple of weeks with a colleague. I thought I'd try for an upgrade to FC, but the colleague is not sure if he is interested. We are both SG. He may be persuaded at the check-in. But that may be too late...

Options
1. Book an upgrade through QFF now (if available):?:
2. Try for an upgrade at check-in (free with SG? Chances?)
3. Use points at check-in top upgrade.:-|
4. Stuff-it. Fly J.

1. Try it (now) with points. You can only request an upgrade, QF will process all upgrade requests in priority order (involves various factors including status, timing of request, fare etc.) You won't know till probably the day of departure whether you are successful...leaving it till this late hinders your chances somewhat.

2. I'm never going to say never, but I would be counting on flying J if trying this approach.

3. Don't think that is possible.

4. The only guaranteed outcome of the 4 options. :)

If you really do want to fly F, then the sensible option would be to lodge an upgrade points request now and hope for the best.

From my understanding of QFF program.

Your have to request upgrades (well really a lottery, there maybe a few WPs infront of you in the queue) at least 24 hours prior to the flight and then supposedly get confirmed 5 hours before departure (but i have had it confirmed 5 days out....)

There isnt on ODU for international flights, just domestics

Very rare of late that OP-UPs occur at check-in, found that recently ones are done at the lounge (PA announcements) or the magical "beep" at the gate.

But enjoy the A380 J-class, at least its flat.

1. You won't find out until 5 hours (in reality about 24 hours) before the flight if you have been successful.

2. Good luck with that, never happened to me as a WP.

3. mm not sure if that will work. Others know better but I suspect priority will be given to WP's first.

4. J is pretty good, but F is better.

I would put the request in now if you have the points...

{{{I have twice, once J-F and the other W-J... had the pleasure of an "Op-Up" at check-in, via F check-in (special and rare moments...!) it really does happen ...}}}}

If I have the points I will always request an upgrade.

And if it doesn't work out, you are on the A380 in J anyway so the trip won't be a chore... enjoy.

J is good anyway, but please do let us know how you go.

Which date and flight number? I can check loads in EF if you'd like.

Line up for a points upgrade request now on line.
Wishing ,hoping and DYKWIA are pretty much ignored.

QF9 Feb 18. Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll put some heat on the colleague. He's got a million points for God's sake! Really, 1m. It just seems bad form though to sit in another part of the 'plane if you are both on the same mission, no?

If he’s not using his points I don’t see why that means you can’t… but if you got the upgrade (and he didn’t bother trying) I’d seriously consider leaving him in the J lounge, if he’s going to be cheap ;)

What, you're planning to talk shop the whole way to London?

Screw that... Shoot for the upgrade.

I'd go for the upgrade. If your colleague has the points and chooses not to use them that is his problem. For me standard social/business etiquette is a little different when you are stuck on an aircraft for the best part of 24 hours.

Wow that is very helpful. I think I'll go for it. Might not get another opportunity. Thanks all. I'll report back after the trip.

Good luck and enjoy! :)

Tried to do the online upgrade but was blocked because we are on a discount biz fare. The 'plane is very full. We have the choice of 25A/B/EF at the back or 17E/F towards the front. Any recommendations?

What do you mean by "on-line upgrade"? If you mean applying to be waitlisted for a Qantas Frequent Flyer points upgrade award, then so long as its a paid business class fare (i.e. not an award ticket) then as far as I am aware there are no discount business class fares that would stop you from applying for the upgrade waitlist. The upgrade request needs to be submitted more than 24 hours before schedule departure in line with the usual FF upgrade terms and conditions.

Personally I would aim for 17EF, but there is not much difference between J seats on the A380. They all have heaps of room.

I logged into my booking (which is a paid ticket) and it came up with a pop-up box that upgrades not allowed. I'm SG.

Have you tried calling QF directly? Also has the flight been ticketed? Occasionally it seems that you can't request the upgrade until ticketing takes place.

Had that happen also

Just call QF and they should process the upgrade request without fuss
