Should QF9 be re-routed

What changes, if any, should be made to QF9 MEL-DXB-LHR

Since QF aren't allowed to carry US domestic pax on any tag flight to other US cities, the only solution is to consider tag flights from LAX to Canadian cities. They should collaborate with AA to make this happen - e.g. YVR only gets AA service out of DFW, so they shouldn't have a problem with QF running a LAX-YVR service or to somewhere else like Toronto/Ontario/Montreal
Qantas used to send the 744 from SFO to YVR & back.

They could still not make a profit from that , even trying seasonally.

I'm aware it was tried around 2007, but perhaps the problem is that SFO is not really an AA hub. LAX is, there would be more opportunities for feed. Plus you might be able to get feed off other carriers - e.g. FJ, MH, JL.

Look at how CX makes a killing on YVR-JFK because they run a superior international product compared to the short-haul rubbish that pax otherwise get on AA/AC/UA etc.

Besides, AC make a killing on SYD-YVR. QF really needs to do a tieup with WestJet to provide Canadian feed.

7 pages of debate, because SOME flights during the OFF PEAK season are flying half empty. Oh what a surprise, there is a reason it is called the OFF PEAK season.

I know this poll may not mean much but one thing is very, very clear.

The DXB transit is not popular.

I am thinking of a Oneworld award June 2015. I want the USA and SE Asia included which means Qantas on only 2/4 long(ish) legs where as before I could have had 3/4. Sad indeed as a very loyal Qantas frequent flyer.

Qantas Airways has cancelled three of its return A380 flights from Melbourne to London via Dubai over the next two months for lack of demand as it works to make its international business break even
.

From today's AFR

Beginning of the end for QF9/10 ?

That is just amazing cancelling a premium destination such as LHR when others are flying several times a day WTF is going on at QF?

Perhaps more to do with the rescheduling for runway works. 6 out of 120 is not that significant.

When do the runway works strart and also it does clearly mention due to low loads. The article also states that there will be no disruption to QF's Flights due to runway works other than some retiming.

Runway closures are needed to facilitate required maintenance procedures for both runways at Dubai International Airport, spanning an 80 day period commencing Thursday,May 1, 2014.

1 May 2014:

  • Full time closure of the Southern Runway commences at 1100 local (0700 UTC).
  • Single runway operations will commence on the Northern Runway.
  • Regular maintenance on the Northern Runway will thereafter be conducted every Sunday between 1559 and 1800 local. (1159-1400 UTC)
31 May 2014:

  • The Southern Runway will be handed back to ATC at 1300 local (0900 UTC) and re-enter operational service.
  • ATC will subsequently close the Northern Runway.
  • Regular maintenance on the Southern Runway will thereafter be conducted every Sunday between 1559 and 1800 local. (1159-1400 UTC)
20 July 2014: Northern Runway handed over to ATC at 1800 local (1400 UTC). Dual runway operations commence.

Fair enough, though I do seem to remember similar sparodic cancellations at about the same time period in previous years for various services.

In general it can be quite the slow period, with many sales for February/March.

The last half of the fiscal year is always difficult with so many holidays, while VFR traffic helps fill planes its business/corporate traffic the drives the bottom line.

Of course the travel budgets of many business are often rather depleted by the second half of the financial year and corporate travel slows down somewhat through autumn while they are given a breather/reassessed.

Correct. They used to cancel QF1/2 quite a bit at quiet times, as well as services to LA, or down grade (size wise) A380's to 747's. Think many are reading too much into it, especially as the cancellation is just 3 services over 2 months! If it was 3 services a week for ever than yeah maybe 'worry'.

The only other airlines flying Aus (SYD specifically) to LHR are BA and Virgin Atlantic with one flight a day each. Qantas has double that with A380 capacity.

Now yes other airlines (EK/EY/SQ/TG/MH etc etc etc) may well be able to offer through routing several times a day, but only because they are flying through their home HUB ports where they can combine end to end passengers with passengers from dozens of other flights thus making it viable.

Serfty I am guessing you are not a scientist, as you never say not significant unless you can prove it statistically.

IMO Berlin is the obvious choice to link in with Air Berlin as a oneworld connection from Germany, the economic powerhouse of Europe.

The question is whether more money would be made out of DXB getting EK feed or from SIN, which might increase loads on QF SIN services from other Australian ports. It would also unlock the A330 running MEL-SIN currently for something else. PER-HKG I say!

Berlin is NOT the economic powerhouse of Germany. Only government and virtually little business. Like CBR added with party and nightlife.
QF should think about DUS - the real AB hub with a bit lots more people and business than BER.

But wait - AB is partially owned by Etihad! So AB may have little interest in feeding QF (and EK)!

QF did cancel the FRA service, because LH did cancel the interlining agreement. LH was successfully feeding the FRA flight with good through fares.
