Silly idea MEL to SGN

16 hours on JAL won’t be entirely fun, you’ll have plenty of sleep time too! . And you’ll arrive well rested on a nice flat bed and ready to enjoy your holiday… rather than wanting to crawl into bed and sleep!
Just out of interest does anyone want to crawl into bed and sleep at their holiday destination?

I'm not fit and I'm always ready to go when I've left Australia and arrived in Thailand. Even in economy. The problem is coming back home.

I remember a number of years ago I flew SYD-MEL-PER-SIN-BKK and then taxi to Pattaya. For me getting there is important part of the holiday. Before my daughter was born I used to look for creative ways to get to destination.

Given that you're WP that potentially changes the equation given the potential (but time is not on your side and peak demand season) to release some reward seats (but J would be pretty difficult, Y probably doable - but then again you might as well go JQ direct in that case).

I would have guessed SIN to be no go, but thinking of other potential places - JQ to HKT etc - if you can get "Business" then that's doable for that kind of flight if not the most wonderful.

I suppose there's going to be a trade off between what you can get and is practical for BOTH of you vs what probably makes the most sense.

If the JL flying via Tokyo is in J, that changes the equation (I apologise, I thought that was Y reward pricing for two!). Certainly that option would appeal more given the relative comfort o the indirect route - vs JQ on the direct (and knowing you're WP, JQ makes far more sense than vietjet or Scott - I was thinking of lower cost either Y or J-ish(ScootBiz) products to compete with JQ). Being able to use WP benefits - at least in aus for lounging would be rather nice, and if going JL of course very helpful.

If SC earn is also potentially a desired benefit, then you'd want to get an SC earning JQ bundle of course (since reward flights won't give you any, unless QF metal and you're also PC/PC+). If this is a minor consideration of course then that again changes the pros and cons of the various options.
Thanks Richard, I do enjoy reading your posts.
The prices northbound on JQ to any of those places are all similar, and there seems to be zero chance of reward seats.

However, there are sale and saver to HKG on a few of our dates in both directions as well as CX rewards to SGN.
So with great anticipation I rang up just now and was straight through to HB and a very helpful person who requested some dates and they all came back as no, even though saver and sale is available.

The SC earn is a minor consideration, but I may as well get what I can and they are always useful, as retaining P is worthwhile for me. Plus inching closer to LTG, why give up now!

I am thinking that that amount of points and that extra time travelling via Tokyo is not ideal, but I have appreciated peoples thoughts who have done it. It does appear to be a 787, although I would enjoy one more ride on a 747.

If I could get the return sorted on points I would then consider a few alternatives northbound.
I suppose we could just go and not worry about coming back! haha
🤣

JL runs the E12 config to MEL... which is the Apex suite.

Hey you are right. I just checked. I was notified about the change to shell neo after I booked. I have another booking in sept that’s still shell neo. But upon checking the seat plans, apparently all of the flights are now back to full apex suites. My flight isn’t until early sept. Seat plan shows apex suites from Mel to NRT direct on JAL, so is all lie flat up until 1st of sept for now.
