I have a very good friend heading to Vietnam on Thu nt for 3 weeks - he has just discovered the Vodafone Red Roam not useable in Vietnam - any suggestions on best local SIM to purchase? Readily available?

I have used Viettel. Very cheap call rates and gets you cheap international calls as well. You do get a bit of spam advertising with them. I bought a US$20 card for my iphone, but there are a range of prices available. Don't know about data with it though. Can buy the sim cards there and they usually install. Plenty of retailers around just need to look out for the signs in the shops. I've found that places that book tours (which are a dime a dozen) sell sim cards.

Don't go with Viettel, they are the sh*test for reception and data. Stick with Mobiphone and your friend will be alright. You can buy a sim just after you clear customs before you head outside into the pick up area. Theres a 300K VND (15AUD) sim with 3Gigs of data and calls which is really well priced.

+1, we got this and lasted us the whole time we were there.

Viettel reception is arguably the one with the widest reception. I have access to phone and data services whether I'm in the middle of Saigon or at my place in a rural and remote village with minimal public infrastructure. For 3 weeks the 20000d sim should provide enough calls and data.

Viettel is owned by the government and has cough reception and services. 16 times I couldn't access facebook and data.

Mobiphone is the way to go with the younger generation.

I might give Mobiphone a go next time I go. Never had a problem with Viettel though.

That's counter to the experiences of my family and friends. Facebook is often not available in Vietnam regardless of the service provider used. There are some workarounds if you need them and there are periods of time when there are blocks and periods of time when there aren't any blocks. Generally though I have no troubles using Facebook through the mobile with a Viettel SIM but would have more difficulties with using it on my home ISP.

It usually has better reception because the national network is more extensive. But most tourists should be fine with any of the other networks given that they'd stay mostly in urban centres.

I also used Mobifone when I was there. They're very reliable for 3G data. Had no issues whatsoever

I can always access Facebook and the likes perfectly fine on Mobi everytime i'm in VN, a matter of fact 2 days ago for 4 days I had no trouble.

I made the mistake and went with VT 3 weeks ago and service was blotchy here and there but I guess it all comes down to one's luck.
