Hi Guys

New member first post.

At present I dont have a Frequent Flyer credit card and am in the market for one.

My main FF program is Qantas but am also a Krisflyer member but dont have any points as yet. I am looking for a reliable Visa/Mastercard credit card that doesnt need all the bells and whistles (e.g travel insurance) and can earn points on ALL purchases. Was hoping members may recommend one. Maybe with a nice points sign up bonus?

Last year I spent about $10k on my credit card but that doesnt include rent or insurance. Is it possible to pay these also on a credit card to earn points?

Thanks in advance

All you need is the Woolworths Qantas Master/Visa $89 plus I think you get 16000 bonus points for signing up. With that type of CC spend that would be all you require. CM

note that the fees on paying rent via CC almost certainly make it not worthwhile.

Thanks all for your replies. Have taken the advice and applied for the Woolies card. Will not be paying rent via this card though.

Yep agree with the EDR, good earn, low fee, signon bonus. Fits your profile well!

For rental rewards they charge about a 1.7% fee for paying with a credit card... If you go above the EDR 1pt/$1 rate and get a card like the ANZ Platinum Amex/Visa combo with the Amex card getting 1.5pts/$1 spent and use that as the card for Rental rewards it actually lowers the fees to very close to 1 cent per point which is a reasonabe rate (about 1.17 cents per point...)

So on paying my $420 a week rent it is costing me about $427 a week and the $7 should have me earning me about 600 points which to me at least is an ok rate to earn them... when you average it out with the bonus sign on and other points you earn for free on shopping it all averages down under 1 cent per point...

The Visa card in that combo only earns 0.5pts/$1 so the Woolies EDR Visa can be a handy card for where you can't use your ANZ Amex... The ANZ Amex/Visa plat combo costs about $295 a year and there are promos where you get 32,000 QFF points on sign up... After the first year, i called up threatening to close it and because i had put a bit through it (the rent alone adds up to over $20,000/year (and 30,000QFF points)) they gave the card to me for just the Qantas FF program fee of $55 a year, and comes with free Travel insurance which would usually cost me $3-400 per year or more, so all round a pretty sweet deal i think...

Sounds like good advice. Only problem is that ANZ are not offering a points sign up promo at the moment for new customers so I am on the hunt for something similar i.e $1=1.5pp

I'm sure there are others out there at 1.5pts/$1, usually platinum cards... Which can also then entail a higher minimum salary to qualify...

But just got to keep eyes peeled, or watch AFF as new credit card offers are often posted... But I have seen that ANZ Plat/32,000 bonus offer a few times....

I'm not sure a $300 a year credit card can be justified for $10000 spend plus rent. Plus also maintaining the EDR card anyway.

As i said, after 1 year of putting a decent amount through it it now costs me only $55...

I did have a an EDR and the ANZ combo at one point but i put the majority or my spend went through the Amex and only about $10,000 through EDR and they wouldn't waive the $90 annual fee and so with no bonus points, that was the card that got closed...

Once i got the ANZ plat down to $55 at 1.5 pts/$1 and free travel insurance instead of paying $300-500 etc it made quite a bit of sense to me... Even if i had kept paying $295/yr the travel insurance would have paid for itself, but i probably would've routinely shut it down then resigned on the next time the 30,000 point bonus was offered... But everyone is different i suppose... Seeing it requires a $50,000 salary you would probably put more through it than that $10,000, i try to put all my purchases, fuel, shopping, bills even to visiting maccas go through it...

Thanks Medhead. Would it make a difference if I said that my rent was around the $35,000 p.a mark?

The value question remains up to you. Having thought about it a bit more maybe I should retract my previous post. I'll assume that you'll have to pay the full card fee because I don't think $45000 is sufficient spend to earn a fee waiver. If you only have the EDR card then $45000 spend is going to get you 45000 points for the cost of $595 (1.7%) for the rental payment.

By comparison for the AMEX/EDR combo. If you get a 50/50 split on your $10000 then you'll be pulling in 65000 points. An extra 20000 for an extra cost of $300 - you still have to pay the 1.7% so that is neutral. It's probably worth it, and it's going to be more worth it if you can put more spend onto the platinum Amex. Full list of potential spending options below.

I'm still not sure $45000 is decent enough to get a fee waiver. But excellent suggestions for increasing spend on the card.
