A friend and I have decided to "do" the Singapore F1 Grand Prix this year - this got me thinking maybe others would be interested...

Any takers?

GP 26 September...

Suggested so far, Travel to SIN 22nd / Return 28th - MEL/SIN/MEL QF9/10 $1112 presently
Accommodation ~$2K at Clarke Quay (Novotel)
GP entrance - 170 - 400 Euro (bound to come down)

So all up approx $4K + food and booze

Mr!

tempting... i could get myself accreditation from work too!! but then i could be in Delhi getting ready for the Comm Games.

I've done SIN F1 GP for the last two years, and while I don't mind the place I'm not planning to go this year. More than happy to share my hard learned advice from these two trips.

Firstly, either grandstand backing onto the Padang (suprisingly Padang A or B, or Connaught) are your best bang for buck. Seats are around AUD500 for the full event. Those stands give you multiple entry/exit options, and quick access to the Esplanade if any of the post-race events are your thing.

These stands also give you easy access to great food on track. Because of the number of vendors they have on the Padang, lines move very fast and prices are comparable with what you'd pay elsewhere in country.

Avoid the Bay Grandstand. While nice for the price conscious, the views aren't particularly exciting and its a real prick of a stand to exit the venue from each night.

If you can get accommodation for 2k you're doing well (I'd love to know how frankly), on average you'd be looking 3k for that period in a decent 3-4 star property around that time either on Sentosa or on/off Orchard. Clarke Quay is generally 4k to astronomical.

Another word of warning from hard learned experience, most SIN hotels also cheat and quote prices in the booking engine exclusive of taxes and charges.

If you're like me and not up for the high grade digs for the event, there are 2-3 backpackers in Singapore that I'm more than happy to give glowing recommendations for. They have top-flight security, quiet, well behaved, and on the doorstep of all services (inc. one which is literally opposite an MRT station). On the plus side, this'll give you some more coin to spend on tickets for the race and shopping.

Feel free if anyone wants to pick my brains some more.

I might’ve considered it had the total been a lot less than that. I can’t afford that at all.

If my dad and his mates come down from HK to see it, I’ll try get myself up on a JQ flight I suppose, but if my dad’s not there to shout me accommodation, I shan’t be going unfortunately.

Better coverage on TV anyway :p

Thanks for the advice - I run the dummy booking through to one click from completion on the Accor website for the Novotel - my usual choice of hotel in SIN, and come up with...

So I am sure hotels like the Furama or similar would (typically) be about half the price...

Mr!

Holiday INN is just over $2K for the same dates on Orchard, fortune favors the early booker:

I am hoping to be busy that weekend, and given your Avatar I thought you might be too ;)

I love the Saints, but unless it's corp box, there's no way while my bum points towards the ground I'll fork $1300 for a ticket - the social club is oversold, no guarantee of a MCG seat, the club has forgotten its grass root members in exchange for a raft of supporters new to the club after last years efforts who happened to get in and pay membership before me this year - my mate, a member since basically 6 years old, now over 60 missed out on a social club membership, I'm filthy about it.

Singapore can have my $$$ on grand final day regardless of the two teams there...

Yes it is the F&F rate, you can get similar on the normal advance purchase rate for Atrium or CP Changi for around $1900 total.

I'll be attending SIN F1 this year (with a few others). My flights are already booked SYD-SIN QF31 on 23/9/10, so we could probably meet up for a drink or two at the many bars there in town. (I'm flying out 27/9).

The Bay Grandstand was where I was sitting in the inaugural SIN F1 race. I enjoyed the views with the bay and the skyline in the backdrop though as you stated, it is a bit of a trek (home or the Marina Bay shops for a decent feed).

Am planning to attend the FT SIN DO in Jan 2011, and (hopefully) watch the Cats in September action again so not planning to head over for the GP (though it is a wonderful idea for a long weekend).

I have attended a couple of Singapore Grands Prix, just not F1.

I can recall going a couple of times as a youngster in the early 70s (think Graeme Lawrence, Vern Schuppan, Max Stewart et al), before they cancelled them because the circuit was a little dangerous to say the least.

Two years back, had a room in the swissotel with a balcony over the track... was absolutely amazing.

Sadly, doesn't look like I will be in Singapore for this years GP.. and it seems that the swissotel is already sold out for those dates...

Reality now...

Flights booked for Mr & Mrs munitalP

23 September - MEL/BNE/SIN
28 September - SIN/BNE/MEL

(we are travelling via BNE to meet up with friends who are also travelling - hmmmm, just dawned on me, no Flounge :( )

We are staying at the Novotel Clarkes Quay, Thur to Monday (AUD$960.00) then taking the jungle train to KL early morning, overnight in KL (hotel yet to be chosen) and Jetstar KL/SIN the following evening with time to catch our QF back to BNE

I hope a few AFF members will get up there! Alanslegal - drinks for sure! :)

Sounds super tempting I have to say... I'd put myself down as a maybe.

There is a FLounge in BNE. Its just not anywhere near the same standard at the SYD and MEL FLounges.
