So it appers that the Virgin Group are looking at consolidating their multiple brand names into one (which seems like something that should have been done a while ago). Given this, do is there a preference for a name? Virgin Australia is being hinted as the possible name (subject to SQ and VS allowing its use) or possibly V Australia if not. Ay other suggestions?

Also, does anyone know if there going to be new livery coming DJ's way, as stated in an earlier post?

I think V Australia would work well, but failing that, being given permission to brand everything as Virgin Blue would be good too.

Virgin Blue is a Oz only brand, hence the Pacific Blue. If VS and SQ give the nod then Virgin Australia is the most logical but remains to be seen especially if Branson / Virgin is trying to exit this area.

Pacific Blue is probably their best hope as a single brand and FWIW has "nice" qualities about it.

As an aside the new Virgin and someone else consolidate airline group he keeps talking about might include VB et al. So that might be the new brand.

Virgin Australia or V Australia is what I'd personally like to see :)

I'm sure the Kiwis won't be great fans of a single 'Aus' name, although PacBlue may not last long there anyway.

I would have thought Virgin Pacific is a better name, but then Joburg doesn't fit

Hasn't stopped Virgin Atlantic. SYD/HKG/SHA etc don't exactly fit with "Atlantic" either.

And if you think about it, Qantas doesn’t just fly in Queensland and the Northern Territories :p

Just because you name an aircraft after where the brand originates, doesn’t mean it has to fit geographically with every destination they fly to.

I like Virgin Pacific too, creates a nice symmetry - but failing that, what about Virgin Oceanic? :p

Will be interesting to see what happens on this front. Curious about whether Borghetti will play hardball with the Virgin group of companies over extending the right to use the name.

Apparently DJ currently pay .5% of all total sales (before tax, expenses etc) as a license fee to use the Virgin brand. For their trouble all they seem to get is a sh!tload of hassles, conflicts and contradictions for the price. They can't have branded credit cards for example or go into a whole range of other areas where Virgin have kept the rights.

Regardless of what the ideal name is, i wonder what the best value one is. Now that they have gone a fair way towards establishing V Australia as a viable, more up market brand and that is the direction they wish to go in, i wonder whether it's simply a better idea to drop the Virgin from the name altogether. If they are going to unite under a "virgin" brand (regardless of what it is) they will hopefully push for much greater flexibility about using the brand name or it simply may not be worth it.

777.

Interestingly Virgins main webpage - under companies only lists under Australia - VirginBlue. There is no mention of V Aust, or the other brands.

Such a rule would certainly hamper Singapore Airlines operations.

Having said that, I think the point raised was about whether a name containing 'Australia' would be appropriate for NZ domestic operations.

Not really, there are some sectors(most notably the US ones ) that don't originate/terminate in SIN, but there I can't think of a single flight number that doesn't. Ditto with Emirates/DXB.

Trying to think of a country where domestic operations are conducted by an airline with another country name in it's name, and the only one I came up with with the British Airways franchise operated by Comair in South Africa, so it is not unprecedented. Although I suspect the sensitivity to "Australia" branding in NZ would be heightened.

With many public simply calling it "Virgin", I would guess any branding expert would suggest keeping Virgin in the name as this already has awarness.

One wonders whether the PacBlue domestic operations are going to continue at all, given the potential tie up with Air NZ..

Or the British airways domestic operations in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.*

*To the extent that such routes exist.

I quite like V Australia or V Oz - nice and minimalist. Failing that, anything with Virgin in it would work beautifully.
