Single Deck trains for Sydney network

Only thing that I'm not a huge fan of about this is the lack of swivel chairs. I find these really useful with luggage coming to and from the airport.

I can only think of those dedicated HK trains from/to airport with luggage racks. Maybe Sydney will see similar once new airport becomes a reality

But surely reducing to single deck is a backwards step and will reduce capacity?

Not really, more frequent trains and single deck have much shorter dwell times. Its the time spent at each station that is killing the current Sydney rail network and stopping it becoming a metro style service. Double Decker trains weren't designed to be used for metro services but rather point-to-point services where passengers have plenty of time to embark and disembark.

Agree with this. The double decker with the limited exits really do slow Sydney trains during peak hour. Combine this with Stations such as Townhall that cannot cope with the traffic and it's one hell of an inefficient trip.

It is fantastic that there will actually be a train line to the North West...again. The previous one was ripped up 80? years ago, and it feels a bit like we have been hearing promises from politicians ever since that there will be train line "real soon now"! Something is definitely better than nothing.

However, I am not a great fan of the metro concept for outer suburbs. Having to stand for 30+min is not particularly appealing. One of the great appeals to me for catching a train is being able to work/read/snooze. Doing that whilst strap-hanging will be challenging.

The old line went from Castle Hill to Parramatta If I'm not mistaken. There is talk of light rail connecting these two again in the near future also.

The new airport won't even have a rail link at all when it opens. Just a bus to an existing train station.

Not quite sure that I see the relevance of this thread to an aviation forum.

This new line is not a means of direct travel to SYD airport (although as with any public transport in Sydney one will be able to use it to connect to an airport-bound train) and nor is it like high speed rail which is an alternative (as yet untried in Oz) intercapital and intrastate means of travel.

With the planned frequency I can't see it being standing until Epping.

It's metro concept because it will extend to the CBD where a metro is needed

There are plenty of aviation forums on the web, AFF is surely not one of them. It's more about travelling , and people that travel a lot (frequent flyers if you like). This thread is definitely one for those who travel to/from parts of Sydney so certainly relevant for that group, but like many other threads not so relevant for everyone.
