Six million people a year would use train to Melbourne Airport

Seems Skybus didn't make it's kickback payment on time this month for the airport chief? He is not happy!!!!

More like the airport corporation wants the government to build them a free rail line and train station.

Privatise the profits and socialise the losses.

The airport gets its share out of Skybus. Those premium locations it has in front of the terminals cost somewhere between $1.50 to $2.00 for each passenger picked up or set down....

Did anyone else catch the latest episode of Utopia on Wednesday night?

A hilarious (albeit fictional) look at the governmental planning process for a Melbourne airport rail link.

Bring back Bert!

Bert can do the project for $2 billion, the trough snouters for $6 billion. Bring back Bert and the Dept of Public Works I say. #UtopiaABC

How is the train line to Melbourne Airport plan going? Has it made it into the 2050 funding plan?

After last night trip into CBD and seeing the tailback heading to the airport the problem isn’t going away.

The other side going to the airport right back to the city. At 3.30pm.
We returned to MEL on Friday evening, landing at about 2240h. By the time we were in our taxi home it was about 2315h and traffic towards the airport was crawling/stationary from Mickleham Road all the way back past DFO to the Bell Street interchange. Having used airport trains (with our luggage) without difficulty in CPH, ZRH, VIE, HEL it just about made me weep with frustration.

Airport Drive is interesting - looks like it's made for a future light/heavy rail connection to the airport (but only to T4 so that it's useless for the majority of travellers).

Huge queues on the Tullamarine...and Airport Drive is empty. Don't tell anyone though.
Shhhh, that's a secret for locals only. Although they have made the back way harder to negotiate with all the warehouses and stores.

Who knows

I suspect it will happen around 2030.

Surely not much scope for extra funding at the moment with all the works going on. But when they start wrapping up in 3-5 years, if the appetite is there...I will say at least there is a PT option, and the Skybus for all the faults I find a pretty acceptable option. It seems to be a well run operation whenever I happen to catch it (every couple of months)

The new trains planned for Melbourne will be standing room only with a capacity of 2000. Current Capacity is around 1000.

Depending on frequency and capacity of the trains, we could potentially get up to 3000-12000 cars off the road every hour.

Hopefully they also run early and late trains to MEL.

It will be interesting to see the public response to the Perth airport train line. And whether the "domestic" station just past the airport gets more use than the airport station.

Stay tuned while wandering

I'm not normal :p but I will quite often walk to/from Mascot station to avoid the airport penalty. However, if it rains I accept the penalty.

How much further away is the "domestic" station from the airport station?
