Sky Marshalls

One of my best mates was a Marshall. He loved the training but said the long haul flights get boring after a while. He returned to regular Policing. I'll say one thing he told me - they blend in.

Did he ever let out Whats the mix between domestic and international and would there be more attention placed on US flights?

When I flew to DFW last year, I had a well built american man who sat next to me, drank nothing, said little (although he did politely explain what was actually in Fort Worth.) I asked him if he had done this route before and he said yes...

Also he had a bulge on his calf....

Ah the bulge, a dead giveaway!!

At the end of the day - you can get weapons of any type onboard an aircraft (as long as it fits in carry-on) with some time and investment - in countries that don't x-ray at the gate.

Or look at things which don't arouse suspicion which could be turned into weapons easily. A couple of years ago my very nice carry-on bag handle broke (at SYD QP, but as I was returning from an OS trip, not as I was about to embark on one), as it turned out there was a nice long piece of metal which ran right down the middle of the bag as part of the handle locking mechanism. Had I known it was there, I could have easily taken the bag into the loo on board and fashioned myself a nice little weapon which would have done a lot of damage to people. Certainly much more than a little safety pin or a knitting needle, both of which where been blocked at security at this stage.

As for a sky marshal, I have my doubts that one or even two people no matter how well trained would truly be able to prevent a well coordinated attack, where the attackers have no problem in dying and that may even be the objective. If a marshal is on board I'd imagine they could stop the crazies, but not a well planned attack.

Interestingly enough this DFW flight was the same day as after I met Mal in the F lounge :p

Clearly, he was just happy to see you (and endowed like a draught horse) ;)

Yes but how many beers had he downed before boarding ;)

I can't remember. I do remember being a bit tipsy myself, getting the op-up beep at the gate to PE and then asked kindly if they could assign me an empty skybed instead of a standard PE seat.... :p Which they did... :D

It's a tough life!

I remember spending many an hour in the BA "F" Lounge in SFO (if you've been there you'll know why I put it in inverted commas). I rolled to the plane, got the beep at gate and was handed a PE Boarding pass. I looked at it, and in my best drunk DYKWIA voice and faced remarked "But this is a window seat!!??!!!". I still to this day regret saying that to the poor person trying to look after me by bumping a then mere SG! :D

I just got them to unblock the middle skybed seat. :p

(I'd much prefer the bulkhead middle skybed to a PE seat...)
