Skybed MK1 anxiety

A few disparaging comments here about the quality of the seat being important. Personally if I had a choice I would not choose an angled seat - like the old sloping CX J seats - I stopped flying CX as I had those a couple of times. SO it is relevant - it is still much much better than whY.

I am a fussy sleeper, so I would definitely prefer Skybed MKII over Skybed MKI.

However having flown QF22 in Y back in March this year (long story ), I can assure you that Skybed MkI is a big step up from Y.

Given bothe QF21 and QF22 are later-in-the-day red-eyes, a strategy of being tired when boarding and having a few drinks should mean you sleep well, even if you are on a slight slope...

As an FYI - QF often put older 744s on the NRT route, so it is a lottery as to the product you get.

If you wan't to be guaranteed a fully flat bed, I wouldn't fly QF SYD-NRT.

Who would you fly then? JL don't fly fully flat to SYD do they?

SQ via Singapore... but it takes a lot longer.

CX is a lottery HKG-NRT, but you consistently get a flat bed to SYD.

I cannot sleep on MKI angle at all and I toss and turn a lot. I found that adjusting the seat slightly so that it wasn't completely flat, actually worked a bit better. Someone on AFF suggested propping feet up with a pillow to stop yourself from sliding down. At the end of the day, "83% of flyers are happy with MKI seats"

I also learnt this trick on AFF. Definitely less sliding if the seat is kept slightly kinked than "flat".

After flying in both MK1 and MK2 seats on QF in the last few months personally I would not say there is a whole lot of difference between the seats, other than the MK2 goes flat as opposed to slightly angled for the MK1. I don't really mind either as they are far better then anything in economy, but the MK2 is slightly more comfortable then the MK1 to sleep in. But with the new seat cover that goes on after take off it does improve the comfort level of the MK1 as it gives a bit more padding.

But as your flight has no first class I would be trying for row 1-4 so you get the old first class seats, as they are lay flat seats.

Not necessarily - QF have one 4 class 744 configuration with "old first class seats" and two 3 class 744 configurations, one with row 4 and the other with row 5. It is only the latter with Skybed mk2.

I noted in post 18 how to tell the difference (hint 1B).

so the 2x3x2 PE seats in Zone B (23-26) are still Mk1's?

Ok missed that little difference.

Still the forward cabin is nice and you get off the plane quicker, personally from the few flights I had on them I would take the forward cabin over the upstairs, but the upstairs over the main business cabin on the main deck.

Life is pretty good if you have Skybed MKI anxiety.

Life is fantastic - I've just sold my business and am off to explore the globe. Ill post some trip reports and do an unbiased review of MK1 not having flown J on QF in 15+ years.

Thanks for replying all - I like the debate and candour.
