Probably wandering OT again, with tripadvisor, I find it quite useful (not the overall score, but the individual reviews). I particularly take note of reviews written by Australians, over those written by others, as I think there are things that we overlook in hotels that perhaps some others don't (gross generalisation here ...)
Last week I actually had an experience that actually reaffirmed my faith in tripadvisor.... I tried a new hotel in Canberra, the realm hotel in Barton. Based on the review, I expected some problems at check in, non branded toiletries but other than that a good modern hotel. Exactly what I got - a few issues at check in, but otherwise a pleasant experience.
