Small Ship Cruises

Out of interest, when does it become a "Small Ship" as opposed to a yacht, boat etc ?

I have enjoyed some live-aboard snorkelling trips of about a week each with upto say 30 pax but would not regard the boats as small ships.

Obviously the original definition of a ship as a 3 masted square rigged vessel is out of date. But how big before a marine vessel can be judged to be a ship, or small ship?

In the Navy we used to say 'ships carry boats' but not sure whether that was the authorised definition or just an another example of sailor's folklore.

And submarines of ANY size were also "boats"..... possibly a nod to the U-boot designation.....

Yes - I think that comes from the German word for submarine, which is something like 'unterseaboat' or similar..

I went on a small ship, Polar Pioneer, to the Antarctic Peninsular in January. It carried 54 pax and there was definitely nothing luxurious about it, but I loved it.
