SMS Login Verification - Argh

Really? I'm sure I can dig out bills from 2010 to about 2015 where I was charged for receiving international SMS. Certainly this was very common in the naughties and 90s.

What country were you living in then? Certainly not Australia. The billing system isn't even structured to allow such charges for the major carriers, from what I understand. As in, it's not considered a chargeable event so the network won't even forward billing information back to your carrier.

One big learning, Some people do not understand the difference between Mobile Data and the Mobile network.

Most certainly was Australia. I guess what you understand about the billing system doesn't match what has occurred with a major Australian telco. I'm not sure why the overseas carrier needs to sending billing information back to my Australian carrier, since the Australian carrier knows I got an SMS while roaming and (used to) be able to charge on that basis alone.

This is awful. Just logged into Mr FM’s account and had to get a code from him. It means I will no longer be able to log in to Ms FM and Dr FM’s accounts and do things for them, which is really annoying (like choose seats for them at T-80, as they are working and don’t have the ability to do it). I am all for security, but just on login seems a bit over the top :(

Interesting- having put the code in once I can then logout and login again without getting an SMS with a code again. I wonder what happens tomorrow - will have to try it.

Manage My Booking might help for seat selection.

And of course the MyGov website works off SMS as the 2FA for everything to do with tax and government benefits.

What sort of "security questions" does this nonsense have?

When ANZ started using security questions for their online banking, I became unable to access my account and ended up cancelling the card. They only had preset security questions to pick from. Not a single one of those questions had an answer that could be provided. An answer either did not exist or the question was better off not even thought about for mental health reasons.

You don't have to answer truthfully. Just pick a keyword for each website, all good as long as you provide the correct word. aardvark is a valid answer for all question.

Yes, but the Government, of all entities, should be using a better system than SMS/Email in the form of an authenticator app.

I've been on four major carriers (Voda, 3, Telstra, Optus) and have never been charged to receive SMS when roaming. Mix of pre-paid and post-paid. Sending SMS used to be exorbitant though, something like $0.75 to $1.50 per message. Used to be very meticulous in checking a bill which included roaming charges.

Of course this may have differed depending on your plan. Also not sure about how MVNO's charge.
 
I only get asked to verify via sms when logging onto to Qantas for the first time from a new device or browser - cookies mean that next time you log-in you dont have to verify again. The exception is I had to verify to gift a lounge pass this morning, but no issue.

Yeah I don't understand why people don't realise this. My mother's maiden name is certainly not what I tell Qantas it is.
 
Discovered what a PITA this is when I was in the U.S. a couple of weeks ago - my roaming worked fine in Dallas and Chicago but when I turned it on in Wisconsin it had a hissy with the local phone network and wouldn't recognise the sim for the rest of the trip - couldn't receive SMS, data, anything... - couldn't use Lyft,

My gov is really poor overall. Complete nightmare trying to help said young adult deal with ATO via my gov. Totally agree.

This was some time ago, 2010 ish that I can remember, and earlier. No issue now, just don't agreed with the claim that Australian telcos have never charged to receive SMS
 
There is an authenticator app for MyGov! Not sure about ios, but here's the Google Play store link

I didn't know that but reading the reviews on the Google Play Store, I'm not sure I would be bothering.

Once again though, why have they used our tax dollars to develop their own app when they could have just used the Microsoft or Google authenticator apps?

That's certainly a valid criticism, but just wanted to point out that they do offer a more secure option, which Qantas should also do. Using a standard protocol would be much better.

As far as the app, I don't know what people are talking about, it was super simple to setup, and I just checked, and it works fine. Loads instantly, with a code showing straight away.

All Qantas really need to do is add an option to generate a code in their mobile apps, then we can finally give up on this thread.
 
Is anyone receiving sms codes at the moment? I have previously received them successfully but none are coming today.

Yeah I can't recall ever seeing a plan that charged for incoming SMS... no matter if local or if roaming. I'm curious to see one!

Many moons ago Telstra used to charge 25 cents to receive an SMS overseas

It does make you do the SMs again after a period of time.

Not sure we need to confuse matters by bringing in local, no one has suggested such a thing

Just had a thought/light bulb moment, if you use a smartphone, one of those that can do internet on it, ie, not the budget nokia c2 sort of things, the ones without buttons I mean, and are not getting sms from QF while in Aust, go and turn off harassment filter on the phone.
I was doing some things, also needing 2fa, not with the QF website, and kept waiting very long times, and no sms, but the websites kept saying sms sent.
Go to "Phone Manager", then "Harassment filter", and turn it off, you an turn it on later after the QFF process.
If QFF uses a private number sort of incoming sms/sender from a private number, your phone might not make sms ring tone.
But if you go and have a look, under harassment filter, you will see the missed messages and calls.
Important also to note, even if your regular people who call you, might also get blocked, ...
I discovered that my harassment filter had blocked a lot of people, even those I know, and they said, they did sms me, because it (the filter) was on, and so had some missed calls too.
