Hi All,

First a background note: 47 sectors with QF this calendar year, 0 OP-UPs (not complaining - just a stat!)

Last night coming home SYD/MEL, as i changed my flight to an earlier one and did OLCI, was booked into seat 33A, not a bad seat no issues there, and upon going through boarding, got a boarding pass denied.

I thought, oh wait, is this it? is this the moment, that i get my first OP-UP? can it be true? Inside i was full of great expectation! Having seen god knows how many get op ups in front of me over the last 6 months.

Get my boarding pass 56E WTF? im like, but isnt that practically the worst seat in the house? Didnt say a word, copped it on the chin and boarded.

Flight was full, didnt see who took my seat as went down the far isle.

Here I was thinking it was my golden moment! I couldn't have been any more wrong..... oh well always next week, and the week after etc...... :)

So im now coining a new phrase and ill include in my stats: the OP-Down.

Cheers

Ryan
PS anyone noticed QF's dom dinner meals of late are nearly all curries? not complaining the thai red curry was ok last night, but it seems every dinner flight of later has been some sort of curry. And for those that travel in J, whats the sort of average menu like on a dinner SYD/MEL ?

To be honest, it didnt bother me at all, the people either side of me were fine, and its only a short flight, and its never happened to me before so it really wasnt a big deal, i just thought it was rather funny that in my mind i was thinking YES an op-up! only to get the opposite :)

Back to the OP's issue.

Not only would I have likely chosen my original seat for a good reason, to be re-assigned in a non aisle seat down the back makes it far worse.

I would have nicely but strongly advised them that I wanted a better seat and waited for this to happen (carrying a pleasant demeanour).

What it probably means is that some lazy check-in agent has simply tossed an SG (OP) out of their allocated seat to solve an issue in front of them, thereby making your issue "someone else's problem". In this case it became your issue; I would have made it the gate agent's.

It's too late now for any real redress, any complaint to Qantas would probably be met with a "form letter apology" containing "seat assignments are not guaranteed".

And for what it's worth the action I indicated would have been undertaken by me, even in my SG days of earlier this century.

Haha, well... I, like you, have been *teased* at the gate for more than a few times. The magic never happened (domestically)!

I had penne with pesto and vegetables last week.

I seem to get this all too often these days. Bland is the best way to describe it.

From 33A to 56E. That is no way to treat a QF Gold  I would have politely demanded my original seat back or if that was unavailable a better seat. There is more than enough non-status, bronze and Silver members to pick from to give 56E....

I had that Penne the other week too, bland yes, but as you can see from the picture there is a lot worse.

Well, i think i was so overcome into thinking that i was in line for an op up it never really dawned on me to be upset, and it really didnt phase me anyways to be honest, but i guess next time i might say something.

Still about a month till i pop my platinum virginity, and I would like to think they wouldnt do that to a Platinum?

Still curious on the domestic J dinners though.

Also having never flown F on AA before with virtually no expectations ill be curious to see what thier food is like.

Yay! Early congrats!
I am really curious about the seat options available for Platinums.

I got my first ever op-down (i called it a downgrade) on 18 Jan this year flying with Virgin ADL-SYD. Somehow, I managed to OLCI an exit row seat. Get to the gate and I'm moved from the exit row to row 7. I guest someone paid for the seat or something. I didn't know if I should be happy about being moved to the front or upset at missing out on the extra leg room

Last time I flew Y SYD-ADL earlier this year I also had bland penne. I thought, what is the point of this when I could just eat at the airport food court earlier? Even a simple value meal at Hungry Jacks tastes better than the bland penne I had in QF, and it is supposedly a premium airline ......

HJs may taste much better but you heart might thank you for having the penne.

I quite liked that.

There are a few threads where experiences have been posted.

I wonder what the price difference between the two is, a burger offered by an airline would be a good meal, but these days they’re all prepared fresh even over the counter, so reheated on a plane might not be that great.

"Op-down" IMO. I think it's pretty poor form from QF.

47 sectors, and nothing. That's QF mate.

I've given up on an Op-up's from QF myself. It's a pipe dream buddy. Try to get Serfty's luck to rub off on you, and you might have a chance. Only 2 ways really; A) Pay for a J seat, B) Use points.

No real "luck" at all. In over 1200 flights I might have had 15 op ups ....

QF FF seemingly since beginning of time. Never op-upped domestically.

Last year, however, op upped from Y to PE to and from USA. That made up for all the rest.

I have had that in one year with a lot less flights than you and I still don't consider "lucky" at all.

That's pretty bad, I'd be at the customer service counter as suggested by others. Best to select your seat online around time of booking, seems to 'stick' for me

The other night in J, I had a nice poached chicken salad with goats cheese, sun dried tomatoes, baby spinach, there was also a roast lamb with vegetables which looked pretty good too. A nice little apple friand for dessert was also on offer.
Sure beats QF cardboard pasta or curried I don't know what. :p

2 or 3 times I have been op-up Y-J domestically.

OK, it happend again last night.

Heading back last night on QF459, was booked in 32A with OLCI.

Got to the gate, scanned red, this time i certainly didnt have my hopes up about an op-ip! was told to go over to the main check in check counter at the gate not the little computer next to the scan in points, Was told there was a change of plane so was getting a new seat, no problems at all, was 47B!!!

So taking on advice from here I piped up and said, "thats not a very good seat, do you have anything more forward?" the lady was very nice, and said sure let me have a look, ended up in 25K - good result.

I asked the lady how come i got such a rearward seat given my frequent flyer status and she said she wasnt sure but was propbably caused by the change of aircraft.

Now this begs my attention, am i going to go through this every single time? what on earth is the deal, i totally dig change of planes, happens for sure, but to kick me down the back of the bus? please......

The lady at the gate was very helpful and was able to sort out a better seat so in the end it was all good.

Checking my FF profile it says forward window under seat preference.

Oh and as a side note, Butter chicken for dinner, thats like the 11th curry in a row for dinner........

Oh man that was a major tease! Good that you got a better seat, regardless.
