I am not a meteorologist so happy to defer to those with expert knowledge or a keen interest in the subject, but it looks like conditions are becoming close to ideal for a bit of fog on Monday morning 30 May in Melbourne.

As always it can be patchy and may not affect the airport to any 'serious' degree, but at 2220 tonight (Sunday 29), the BOM was showing an air temperature of 5.2 degrees at MEL versus a dew point of 2.5 degrees, and relative humidity was rapidly rising.

In the past year if memory serves me correctly MEL (airport) has not had fog of any consequence for more than one morning. On the law of averages we are due for a couple of foggy mornings in 2016, with forecasts predicting fog in greater Melbourne on five consecutive mornings from Monday 30 May to Friday 3 June.

So far, as of today (Monday 30 May), no fog of which I am aware. Bureau of Meteorology predicts Melbourne will be down to three degrees tonight, so probably a bit colder at the airport than Olympic Park from where the 'Melbourne' readings emanate. Humidity at 1900 hours was higher than Sunday night's.

The clues...minimal to no temperature split. No wind. Relatively high pressure.

Guaranteed to make it happen...limited arrival fuel, issues with CAT III.

Very sardonic second sentence jb747.

'Patchy' fog still predicted in metropolitan Melbourne for the next three consecutive mornings, 1 - 3 June 2016. Perhaps the way for it to occur at MEL (airport) is not to mention it.

Interesting thread,

Ill use it to predict my chances of QF94 diverting to SYD when I'm on it. Saves me a connection and gets me luggage delivery to my house.

At 2330 hours on Wednesday 1 June the temperature at Melbourne Airport was six degrees, the dew point was 4.6 degrees and humidity was 100 per cent. Barometer was 1027.1 hPa.

How does this rank for a chance of fog either now or in the morning of 2 June, AFF member nonscenic (meteorologist) or our esteemed tech crew members? Is the pressure too low?

Very good chance of fog in the morning for MEL - thankfully i am not going that way tomorrow!

Barometric pressure suggests a stable air mass and low or no wind

Apparently need clear skies and also no wind with the conditions you describe. Additionally need the surface temps to be cold as well

At 1800 hours on Thursday 2 June, 'The Age' online reported that a 'low haze' was disrupting some flights at MEL.

While I have posted further detail in each airline's 'delays/cancellations' thread, QF has cancelled four evening SYD - MEL flights while TT and VA have also had cancellations. JQ has some late flights but thus far no cancellations that I could quickly see.

It sure is chilly in olde Melbourne town this evening.

No news yet re QF94, the ultra long range flight to MEL. It's arrival will be fuel limited and with no special favours for such flights from ATC regarding landing priority, let's see if this flight makes an early divert to SYD

Interesting thread Melburnian1 !

Im doing MEL-SYD-DFW-SDF tomorrow, it better not be too crazy! Least the F points upgrade came through :)

Stay away fog!

Good luck with your SYD connection. At least QF7 is a 1300 departure

Could you give us some insight into the situation at MEL tomorrow?

Why would there be news? The crew themselves won't decide until a couple of hours out.

Staying at the quest in Tullamarine, and the morning jog gladly sees no fog as yet :)

Yep the news say Fog
