Someone's in my seat

Been avoiding this thread because it makes me angry  And I don't want to sound like a DYKWIA

Was on a 737 flight in J. I took my time getting to the plane from the lounge. I had my BP checked as I was entering the cabin and I noticed someone sitting in my window seat.

I went up to them thinking they had misread their tickets and I told one of them that they were sitting in my seat. They replied that they'd been both allocated aisle seats across from each other and because they were a couple they should be able to sit next to each other. I replied with an "Ok" and walked back to the FA who checked my BP.

I told the FA that I had specifically booked and paid for my window seat and that I was disappointed that these pax had ignored their seat allocation.

I asked the FA to tell the person sitting in my seat to move to their allocated seat. The FA awkwardly agreed and asked the pax to move, I got some bad looks from the couple.

Normally I wouldn't care but it's not what they did, it's how they did it. If they had been sitting in their allocated seats and asked nicely if they could swap seats, I would have happily done so (which is what I normally do in Y anyway).

I don't fly J often (and when I do, it's at my own expense) so next time I'm just going to get on board as quickly as I can to avoid awkward interactions like this.

Definitely not DYKWIA behaviour on your behalf however it was by the other couple.

I would put money on it that they were both NB's who had done a last minute points upgrade. You won't meet a more entitled group than that.

To avoid the unexpected by someone seating on your chair. I ask to have people to line up quickly rather then been the last one at the far end of the line. That's what i be doing try focus on the very moment its time to board the plane rather then been the last one. There for i know i have my seat secured rather then a crazy person stealing my seat. Make sure you have your boarding pass ticket and make sure your seat number is what you want and that keep it in your pocket and if anything happens show your boarding pass ticket instead of yelling them but if they don't move ask help immediately. I would hate to see someone to steal my seat. People are greedy know days. I paid my tickets in advance. People should be wiser and smarter by doing the advance as well rather then late and then have your seat stolen by a mog. This does happen all the times around the world. I always pay seat in advance and notice my flight has 90% seats empty.

Out of interest since my travel isnt until a few months time. I notice when i log onto finnair booking i see the live maping of the seats and notice there are ocupied seas in a very unusual ways. And wondering how could those seats be acupied already and because my other long haul flight has the very same seats ocupied in the economy section. Same seats as i going to europe and the one going back to asia the those seats are ocupied in the very same way as going to europe. Are those seats acupied for secret security passangers perhaps ? Only a theory perhaps. But notice there are like a grup area in the economy that the seasts are ocupied for the one on my way to europe but strange enough it is the very same seats ocupied same figuration type plane on my back out of europe weeks later. I was wondering if those ocupied so what seats in the economy are for secret agencies or security people or something ? But the ocupied seats are in a unusual way as in it looks like those seats are taken for a school kids execution thing sort of to speak, But then its not.

Specially the qantas starting from Seat 29 and back are all not taken but seats from 28 and forward are ocupied already in all that seating group in the economy. What could that be ?

On Christmas Day 2014, I flew MEL-BNE and there was a drunk guy sitting in my seat (4c). I didn't mind as my partner was in 4A, so I sat next to him.

My issue was when the FA came up to him and started addressing him by my name, and then started giving him J wine because she through he was me!!

You might have mentioned that to the FA ......

Had a slightly strange one today on a 738 - I was in 19D (with another guy in 19F) when a young woman sits between us in 19E. Didn't think anything of it until a couple of minutes later when another woman stops by the row and asks "Is this row 19?". Young woman checks her boarding pass and she's supposed to be in 18F. No fuss, everything was sorted out very quickly.

It must have been a genuine mistake as it was early in the morning..and I've never seen anyone trying to swap *into* a middle seat!

Our stupid theatre has assigned seating. AND SOMEONE WAS IN MY SEAT just now. They knew. Wanted my aisle seat. .

Going to see my big fat Greek wedding 2. Obviously I am home alone.

I am not happy her large thigh is pressing against my drink bottle. She is closer to me than her companion. A bit of passive aggressive happening.

Vaguely related to this thread, a few months back I was flying QF J from NRT to BNE. Due to the late incoming Jetstar flight (don't ask, I'm still fuming), I was very late to check in, about 35 minutes before scheduled departure. The check in agent was confused by my pre-selected seats, 2 window seats, and offered for me and my travelling partner to sit together. I politely declined and explained to her that with the new business suite, it wasn't necessary, and that being a night flight, I would sleep most of the way anyway. I wonder how they would have dealt with the people holding the boarding passes for the seats if I had changed? The J cabin was full.

You watch out Pushka the drink bottle may give Way......

Just happened to me early in March on a SYD-HKG on QF in J on the upper deck of the old 747. I always like a window seat, but it was a full load, so chose an aisle (better than a middle J seat which you can get in those 747s!) Arrived to find someone in my seat, and (luckily, rightly) presumed she'd just misread or changed to the aisle at her own volition. I just sat in the window seat and was quite happy! Only strange thing was that she'd filled the side lockers with her bags, blanket, pillow etc.....I wasn't sure I was in the position to complain! In a strange twist, half way through the flight she swapped again and ended up in the row behind me. My new seat-mate mumbled something about "the coughpy Skybed Mk I never working properly and put his headphones on.
A strange flight all round really!

I would have taken the stuff out of your side locker and put it in the floor.

So I am (hopefully) going to have the opposite problem on my next flight in Air NZ Business on the 777-200.

We originally booked on one PNR but had to split it so I could use a recognition upgrade and Mrs Jaybeedee has bid for a oneup upgrade. Assuming it goes through she will want us to sit together (not that I even know what the best seating arrangements for couples are in that cabin).

What is the best way to approach it ? - If she gets the upgrade early enough we can try and request seats but that late I suspect it will be hard. fall back position is ask at check-in.

Any strategies on how best to approach other pax if we get to the plane without it being resolved?

(and if she doesn't get the upgrade we'll be doing the same exercise in PE - She doesn't even want to take my J seat and me take the PE :confused:)

jaybeedee,

first up, ignore any comments that suggest that couples should not have to sit together - that is their personal opinion and not applicable to the desires or hopes of others. Personally, I would do everything I could to sit together. If you cannot select the seat before the flight, then upon boarding I would first see how full the flight is (in J) - if it is not very full I would politely chat to the staff and see if they can get you together. If it is a full flight, such strategy would be making the cabin crew (who had nothing to do with your predicament) be put on the spot and have to try to shift people. I believe in that circumstance you should simply ask around to see if you can swap to next to her or vice versa. I have NEVER seen polite people fail to achieve such swaps. I myself usually travel solo, and the good feeling I get when I swap to allow someone to be with their family makes MY flight better :)

(Having said that, don't even think about asking me to relinquish 5B/J (refurb) or 4K (non-refurb) if I am doing long haul on a Qantas 747.)

Yes ask ask nicely and don't have expectations.
