South African Airways to return to PER

Are they still using the A340?

When I was a regular on the flight, we used to get the 343 and occasionally the 346. Hopefully, they have overcome their financial mismanagement and improved the business and service offering.
The Perth Airport website shows them using an A340-300 with a scheduled flight time of 9hrs 25 mins.
 
Well, that's a plane now long in the tooth. With all its operational inefficiencies compared to current technology, I never underestimated the reassurance of four engines crossing that section of the Indian Ocean.

I was happier flying far from land over the Indian Ocean in the A380 rather than on a twin. I am sure there is little to no difference in the safety records but it is just a state of mind.

I agree it is a state of mind. If you fly enough, you understand that 99.99 of risks are well managed.

Of course, you are flying 60 degrees south - you can see Antarctica!

Your fears were well founded..............they couldn't find MH 370

I’d still take 2 787 engines over 4 A340s
 
I respect that view, but why is that? Are you referring to the comfort of the plane they are attached to?

No. Just more confident with the age of the aircraft (90s vs 2010s) and current scale of operations (over 1000 in service vs fewer than 80).

787s are certified to ETOPS 330.
 
Looking at making a redemption booking using this service. I sort of remember something about a PER - anywhere in Africa being priced the same? From what I read, it looks to be a distance based redemption table now (so CPT-JNB-PER pushes it into the 92k category).

Has anyone managed to book a single ticket with an East Coast connection from PER? Or is that too hard for it to handle?

The challenge you’ll have is finding any domestic redemption J availability to Perth from the east coast.

As others have stated, yes. My dad and brother flew these flights in the last couple of weeks. Both directions very full flights and they paid a fortune (albeit relatively last minute booking). Not surprising they're increasing frequency.
