That sounds like good value.

Does SPG have a presence in Pattaya apart from the 5 star resort? Or any good value redemptions in SIN and HKG?

Google SPG category 1 and 2 and you'll find the cheap redemptions which are in my opinion best value, lots in China, India, Malaysia/Indonesia and Egypt. Thailand did have Cat 1 hotels last year but not this, I'm fairly confident it will have again next year for similar reasons Egypt does this year!

Category 2 are in a wider range of places and some are very good value IMO. Not a huge variety of options but some I think I may be able to use next couple of years that are cheap.

It's worth considering. I have a few aa miles from hotel bookings I wouldn't mind converting into a batch of either trans tasman or trans continental flights, and this could allow me to get closer to the total required, but have to compare it against the other good value redemptions available via amex MR direct transfer partners.

Most SPG hotels in Australia are on the expensive side but they do have some affordable options overseas.

You can sometimes get good value points + pay in Sheraton SIN.
Hard to find good SPG value in HKG.
It is hard to keep up with all the programs. All I know is it is easy to earn points but when you go to redeem those points it is not so easy. In a way no different to airline loyalty.

Not sure I agree... I've seen this a lot on FT... I think maybe because they(people saying this) are US based?

So if you have 60k SPG points that would get you say a 7 night stay at a Cat4 hotel right(inc free night)? Lets say that Cat4 hotel is $300/night that's $2100 value...

For the same 60k SPG points you could transfer to AA and get 75k AA. That 75k could get you one way first class AU-LAX or return business class AU-Asia... do you think these are worth less than $2100?
I can see your reasoning is sound.
My situation is ,I have lots of AA miles ,I don't have enough hotel miles ,so paying out $2100 would hurt .

Where did you get all your AA miles from? Do you have a US Credit card? Earning AA miles is harder here...

Not that hard.
Rental cars set to AA earn.
Hilton set to points and miles-AA.
AA dining program-in the US 1-3 times per year.Occas AA shopping points.
Transfer from SPG-my primary hotel scheme.
DC and Amex via SPG in the past-Amex now goes to SQ and I have left my DC points in situ.

All the places drron mentions & especially AA shopping points ,some USA friends & contacts are very pleased with their magazines & points were paid at 60/$ .
I do have some USA cc's & they are good for earning ,even here in OZ .
