I've been in the habit of using the Online Check In facility across SPG since it has been available. Experience has shown it's great to call in by the front desk and show your ID and be given your keys or in some cases you can go straight to the room and use keyless checkin.
Last evening I checked in online for my upcoming 2 day stay at the Four Points Sheraton in Auckland. I arrived at the hotel this afternoon and they thanked me for using online checkin and requested my Passport and credit card. I was then asked to sign the credit card security slip and was then asked to sign the standard check in documentation. From memory this process is exactly the same process as if I hadn't used online check in. Not sure what is going on with the integration of the SPG/Marriott apps with the legacy SPG hotels.
