SQ *A Devaluation

Hi Matt, how do you book this route? I never knew I could with krisflyer miles..

You can book over the phone with KrisFlyer.

You'd have to use either Air New Zealand, or SQ with a connecting NZ flight. Air NZ availability trans-Tasman is pretty limited but you can sometimes find J seats on the SYD-AKL, BNE-AKL and MEL-AKL routes.

SQ has tons of availability from CBR-WLG, and if you get a connecting NZ flight from WLG to somewhere else in New Zealand it will be 17,500 miles one-way. (Booking CBR-WLG only costs 28k miles.)

I recently booked AKL-WLG-CBR for 17.5k miles in J (the AKL-WLG leg is in Y) and around $90 in taxes.

HI Matt, very helpful.
Is the quirk applicable if just booking Sing Air flights or does it have to include a partner airline to be able to fly to Europe for say 95000 ?
If the route is just Sing Air then will they charge 105,000 ?
From your previous post a phone call has to be made to book to get a star alliance flight ?

thanks
Nick

Welcome to AFF, Nick.

You've pretty much got it. The lower "Star Alliance" rate applies for bookings that include only Star Alliance partners, or a combination of SQ and partners. If it's just Singapore Airlines, the higher rate will apply.

My tip - if you want to fly SQ to Europe but get the lower rate, just add on a short Star Alliance flight somewhere in the booking. E.g. fly SQ from SYD-SIN-FRA, with a short connecting flight on Lufthansa from Frankfurt to wherever tacked onto the end.

You currently have to call KrisFlyer for all Star Alliance bookings - the website will only show Singapore & Silkair flights. This is not difficult though - I usually get through within a few minutes and the call centre staff are lovely.

so anyone tried the new search engine as yet?

not sure if I'm doing it wrong but it still doesn't allow to search for a destination that SQ doesn't fly to.
If you pick somewhere SQ does fly to and get the results, then you can further search for "other *A" and "other partner" airlines

Reading the Flyertalk thread, i got the impression that there are a number of IT issues still.

Gday

Yeah i had a play around with it today and it is rubbish. Almost Avianca Lifemiles bad. In its current state it will be borderline useless. Even for LH which it supposedly works for i cannot get it to give a 3 sector flight even though i am certain there are available connections.

Pele.

I have had awful issues with it.

The app wont let me search at all for them.

the SQ *A redemption charts only show, Y, J & F.
Is it possible to use them for PE if the airline supports it? (looking at Air Canada)
Points required will be somewhere in between Y & J? or a better way to work it out

New *A search on SQ website is utter rubbish! Not showing availability whilst other award search engines show plenty of availability.

i'm finding the *A search has improved slightly over the last ~10 days slowly.

Though it seems to NOT show if the 1 way journey includes 2x changes.
I can see availability in Syd to Singapore, and then Singapore to Toronto (via a few different options).
However the same dates from Syd to Toronto results in nothing found.
