A report on power loss in both engines of SQ A330 during flight from SIN-PVG over the weekend. Flight landed safely.

I'm surprised this isn't bigger news - and no reports from passengers. Also surprised it didn't divert to HKG.

the report hints that the power loss was related to weather??? What, a cosmic storm??

Re: SQ836 23 May 2015: loss of engine power above HKG

Reference to this has already been made in the Ask the Pilot thread.

JB will provide an answer later on this week.

Re: SQ836 23 May 2015: loss of engine power above HKG

I can add BA flight 38 (B777) that pancaked just short of the runway in LHR. Investigations revealed ice in the fuel/oil heat exchanger system. This A/C was also fitted with RR Trent engines. Unfortunately that did not have as happy an ending as SQ. May have been a different outcome if they had a longer approach and the ice had a chance to melt.

I can only think of high altitude ice crystals or a fuel flow problem that the crew were able to rectify.

Concerned that after 4 hours on the ground they flew the return leg.
