SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

So much for that theory AU ports are lesser desirable than others for SQ Crew - Crew on 4 sectors all told me they ❤️ AU ports for buying groceries - can you believe that - cheaper and better quality than SG - especially meat!!!

Meat? I enquired? Yes MEAT - both Coles and WW will vacuum pack meats and pack in dry ice for CC for transit back to SG - quite common for SG Crew to bulk buy and consolidate for transit especially pre XMAS - amazing 👍

I have booked a couple of J award flights via VA with SQ, my first time flying with SQ.

They are SQ226 PER-SIN arriving 1910hrs & then SQ308 SIN-LHR departing at 0900hrs, so just under 14hrs layover time.

Just a couple of quick questions
  • Will my luggage be checked through to LHR?
  • Stay airside or go through immigration? Will I have a choice?
  • Recommendations as to which seat for A380?

If the two flights are on the one ticket, then yes to the bags being checked through. If they are separate tickets you will need to ask the check-in agent in PER. SQ are usually pretty good, so it should be ok.

Up to you if you want to go landside. You have enough time to head out for a meal and a cheap hotel close to the airport. Saves stumping up for the airside Aerotel, convenient as it is.

I don't think I have flown J on the A380, so will defer to others except to say that any seat should be fine. Maybe avoid proximity to galley and toilets.

Thanks @JessicaTam , yes they are on the same PNR.

Will have a look at cheap hotel options relatively close to the airport, a lot harder to find than they used to be!

I wonder why the cabin crew often have a lot of luggage. I imagine most of them are in some kind of import/export business arrangements!

We used 14K & 15K in 2022 on the 380-thought they we pretty good, the wing interrupts the view a bit but a pretty quiet spot

I wouldn't think so - 99% guarantee for personal consumption and family / friends
Back in the days, 1970's, when Air India used to fly Bombay (still called that then) - Per - Syd return the crew used to regularly carry refrigerators, ovens, TV's etc as their 'personal baggage'. QF was their handling agent in those days so they used to store their appliances in the QF Bond Store in between flights and on layovers. Apparently they were able to get the stuff into India by some means or other. This lasted for a year or so before QF told them what they could do with their gear .

I did that once on MH. Went to visit some people in KL and brought some fresh Cowra beef for them.
My butcher vacuum seals for free and he gave me a polystyrene box. Allowed 2.5kg Dry ice.

But for some reason seafood not allowed on MH. Is fresh seafood allowed on SQ in checked luggage with dry ice?

I've taken meat to my brother in Singapore. Worked well for him. QF and SQ from memory.

Yes, we always travel with some meat back to Singapore after visiting home, usually lamb, beef and quality butchers sausages (and sometimes good quality pork and ham) And often will take a fair bit of cheese as well.

It's not as if you can't get good quality beef, lamb etc in Singapore, but it comes at significant premiums. It's more the mid-quality stuff that is difficult to find. Cheap and nasty? No problems? Top grade , no problems but super expensive, there for those living on expat expense accounts. Mid range stuff - not so easy to find.

Now CE, for proper unbiased results on the SQ staff and Aussie route desirability, you need to disguise your own nationality. What if they are afraid of offending you?

Fake accent, big fake moustache and wig and ensure you are asking on non-AU routes only. Please take a video for proof, of course. ;p

So I completed 4 sectors all J last week - 208 MEL-SIN / 830 SIN-PVG / 807 PEK-SIN / 217 SIN-MEL - I thought the quality of meals served on all 4 sectors showed a considerable improvement on what i hade experienced 2nd half 2023 - what are views of other recent pax.

The only real downside is the change of lunch to brekky offered on 830 dep SIN 09:0 post covid. PITA - lunch would be soi much better.

And I still give a big recommendation for the BTC lamb rack ex SIN 👍
