So after a great week in Phoenix it was time to head over to Las Vegas about 304 miles according to the GPS. The other lads were a bit shady this morning so I was in the drivers seat and ended up going all the way through. No big deal when you live where I do and distance driving is second nature. This is my first road trip as such in the USA (tick) The first 30-40 miles getting out of Phoenix were fairly hectic but after that it was pretty much highway driving all the way through to Boulder City.

Passed some large truck stops. This one was not so big but some of the others would of had 50 rigs parked up.
Galaxy (1) (320).jpg
Drove for 200 miles before pulling up at Kingman for some lunch. Had never heard of Arby's so we thought we would give it a go. Not such a good decision it was no better than any of the other fast food rubbish we had encountered. Live and learn that's why we travel !

Another 100 miles on and we were entering Vegas. I had stayed at Mandalay Bay on my previous visit in 2013.Galaxy (1) (324).jpg Galaxy (1) (326).jpg

Well and truly back in the traffic

Made it safely to our accommodation for the next 5 nights at the Vdara Hotel & Spa one of the many MGM properties in Las Vegas.
$30/day for valet parking which is peanuts between the 4 of us.
Galaxy (2) (332).jpg

Checked into the Vdara and was most impressed with my room for the next 5 nights. Original cost was US$1080 including the PITA $40/day resort fee. At check out I mentioned that I was happy with everything except the hit & miss wi-fi. The young fellow mentioned they were in the middle of an upgrade and promptly deducted $80 from the bill. So final figure US$1000. The hotel itself was essentially behind Bellagio across from Aria and close to the Cosmopolitan. The 2 winning features for me were 1. It wasn't connected to a Casino and 2. It was non-smoking !!
I would have no hesitation in returning here should I ever do a third visit to Vegas. So a few pics of the spacious room. Looks like I may have got a wheel chair friendly room as the bathroom and toilet appeared larger than normal. My room was on the 34th floor with views South back towards Mandalay Bay.
The lobby: Check-in was just to the right.

TPC Las Vegas cont:

TPC Las Vegas is one of the few Las Vegas golf courses which offers the option for men and women to play the course from a blended tee yardage.

The course plays over 7,000 from the tips with the blue, or member’s tees at 6,769 yards. The white tees are just over 6,000 yards. The men’s blended tees (marked by a blue and white marker), is a mix of 9 holes from the blue members tees and the other nine from the white tees, adding up to just over 6,300 yards. The blended tees bring less forced carries into play and still offers a fair test to the mid-handicap golfer.

So out on my home course I'm used to seeing : Kangaroos, Emus, Echidnas, Snakes, the odd Dingo and once every few years a fox. So today was my first sighting of a Coyote on a golf course.

Had a few drinks at Vdara after golf and the barman tipped us into a place for dinner that was about 20 minutes drive away from the strip.
His tip was Capo's Speakeasy described as a Chicago Mob-themed throwback with a secret entrance providing Italian specialties in dark surrounds. So 8 of us decided this was for us and booked a stretch limo which was about $10pp each way.
Address: 5675 West Sahara Ave, Las Vegas. Hours: Sun - Thurs: 11am - 10pm, Friday & Sat 11am - 11pm

Verdict: A quirky entrance to the premises which keeps to the Speakeasy theme. Great place to dine with good music and ambiance.
My only criticism and I believe it had something to do with us not getting there until 8.15 (with a 10pm close) was the meals felt a little rushed with no time to relax between courses. But a great experience never the less and I tipped the barman the following night. Certainly worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood.

Now I've only played golf in 7 countries and I'm a cough golfer but this course I'm about to show you is the best I've ever played on !!
wolf-creek-logo.jpg
Wolf Creek Golf Club is located in Mesquite, Nevada about 83 miles / 136 kms drive from Las Vegas.

I would have to concur with this statement below :

Wolf Creek Golf Club strives to deliver the ULTIMATE GOLF EXPERIENCE to each and every guest. As you are called to the first tee and look down towards the green, you notice a one of a kind canvas. The detail of the striped emerald green fairway below, lined with brilliant white sand bunkers, you instantly know that Wolf Creek is a special place. This is only a small sample of what is yet to come. As you navigate the elevation drops and wandering canyons, you wonder how they create this miraculous golf course, each hole unto its own. After finishing all eighteen holes, you are hard pressed to come up with just one signature hole and more often than not amazed with the picturesque beauty of the course rather than the score you shot.

The Wolf Pack !

Looking back at the clubhouse gives you some idea of the elevation.
Galaxy (2) (449).jpg
So we all decided to tee off on the Challenger tees just to say we'd " been there done that" So I was aiming for the two bunkers in the middle and it was about a 200m drive to land mid fairway and open up the hole which was a Par 4 and Index 1. Fluked a bogey , very happy !!

What a spectacular looking golf course. One for the list to play on my next visit to the region.

Wolf Creek looks stunning.

I'm guessing the brown parts of the course are unplayable?

Pretty much mate. Most of these courses have had a "Desert" rule so it's treated the same as going into a water hazard. A couple of the blokes that were hungry for points played out of the desert but it was not very forgiving on your clubs. The course, as you said is absolutely stunning.

Great stuff! Finally caught up, certainly a full on trip so far

Certainly the most golf I have played in such a concentrated period @RB. 9 games in 10 days with a 304 mile drive on the rest day
The crowd I normally go away with only play 4 rounds in 7 days so this was definitely full on but it was enjoyable never the less.

I would struggle on this type of course and would only play it for the novelty value and the stunning scenery. Thoroughly enjoying your trip report and the golf courses you played.

Also I am guessing this was paid for by work? I saw some tour prices a few years back for 6 nights in Palm Springs and 6 nights in Phoenix and it looks too expensive for me. Would this type of tour be easy enough for someone to organise by themselves? Courses easy enough to get a game?
