Starting to wonder if frequent flyer points and miles will be used for flying

Redemption, redemption my stomach tells me the glory days are gone. What’s the point if you can’t redeem them?

We booked using our ff points last December to fly in December this year to NY, London & Paris for our family of 4. Can't believe how it's all turned out!! We were so excited to actually get all our flights booked using our ff points. Just waiting now for Qantas to cancel the flights as we really don't want to go due to the CV & unrest in these City's. At this stage if we cancel we will loose quite alot of our points which is just cough considering what's going on. We also booked an airbnb for NY & will loose 50% plus fee charge if we cancel that now. So we have to wait it out & hopefully will get to the point where Qantas cancels our flights & Airbnb is offering a full refund for the period that we are booked for (currently only for bookings up to 31st July) Such a bummer as to get the flights using ff points we had to book this far in advance. Who knew 2020 would turn out like this! So disappointed :(

My toaster broke this morning - dare i consider the sin of a new toaster on points?? Suspect I migth get one on flybuys since transferring points to Virgin is a total waste now.

Virgin is about to do a comeback so keep at it @Lynda2475.
Am thinking our millions of Velocity points may do a stunning recovery in September.

Im looking forward to my Apple watches. I figure around $1500 worth of products was worth a rather meagre points burn. Money in hand and all that.

Our award flight booked in August to Cairns is even looking shakey right now.

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

I have about 900K in QFF points which I was saving for 2 or 3 X RTW J class. At the moment I am holding on to them rather than spending but I have a feeling RTW won't be an option for quite a while. :( Asia and Europe might be though (although less value for points)

We have just returned from a 4200km road trip to North Qld. I used lifemiles and QF points on accommodation.

Not something I would have considered until recently

I'm not convinced flying J short haul is worth it anymore given enhancement to services etc.

That's a good question. But rose coloured glasses? What did we get before? A bigger seat and a $2.50 meal. I think we're still getting both now!

Certainly better than the throwaway snack in Y and which I always refused. But that seems like a J meal now. And space.

I'm going to continue to stick my head in the clouds and tell myself fairy tales that someday I will be able to redeem some of my 3 million points for a business class flight somewhere. Have to say I have been focusing my spend since CV started on earning hotel points as I figure they may be easier to spend. However, going forward, my focus will be on spending points when I can. That said I have not purchased an international flight for past 10 years and have flown multiple times per year in business or first, so whatever the outcome I have to say I have enjoyed feeding at the trough.

I suspect that quite soon there will be lots of people complaining about losing points because there hasn't been any activity for 18 months.

I do hope QF and VA have well worded emails reminding their customers of impending expiration dates.

Still plenty of ways to earn points without flying

It takes little or no effort to keep points alive.

Totally agree, but we often see complaints here about people losing points they've saved for many, many years for their dream holiday.

As once a year flyers their points activity was minimal at best and when they miss this year's flight they will quickly hit the 18 month requirement.

I already have a decent stockpile.
Just booked a redemption for June next year, let's see how that pans out

Hammering the platinum charge card to get the 4.5% back.. Cash is King in this climate IMO

Really, not with Cathay. I just redeemed 340k Asia Miles on 2 x J SYD-AMS (6 May 2021) as they said "no-way" to an extension request beyond the 30 June deadline. The cost to extend using cash simply wasn't worth it. I have my fingers crossed for CV being under control or a vaccine available by then.
