On this forum we are outnumbered by the HH crowd - but I thought maybe a thread in a similar vein to the one on the Hilton Forum about how SPG is treating us.

I'll start with my last three stays (in November):


Sheraton Frankfurt Airport:
1 Night Stay - Cash and Points Rate
Assigned Junior Suite.

4 Night Stay - booked a Lake View Room on a prepaid rate:
Assigned: Superior Suite

It should be noted that this isn't a standard platinum upgrade and may have reflected a service recovery from a stay the previous week.

One Night Stay - booked a "beat the timer" rate

Good for you Burrco.I have often thought about this but never plunged in.
I will post the results from my last trip-November also.Unless otherwise stated I have booked lowest priced king room on a Z#R rate(book 3 get 1 free).
Westin Sydney.Upgraded to king room on Exec floor.
SGS,Bangkok.3 nights basic room and 3 nights in Rachada suite booked-both on Z3R rates.Whole stay in Rachada suite.
Westin Tokyo.Booked a ridiculously low rate immediately post tsunami.No upgrade but lounge access,full breakfast in restaurant.
Sheraton DFW.Upgraded to top floor club room with lounge access.
Four points,SYD.Upgraded to Harbour view.

Yes us SPG AFF'ers are very outnumbered here. Sadly I am also swinging by the Hilton threads of late following my recent HHD status through VA WP. I'll post some update successes in the next hour once I type them up on Word.

Westin Berlin 5N B? upgrade to Unter den Linden Junior Suite
Sheraton Essen 3N B:Standard room - "upgraded" to park view
Westin Berlin 6N B? upgrade to "executive" junior suite on 7th floor
Hotel Des Indes 5N B:superior room upgrade to junior suite

Hotel Pulitzer, Amsterdam; Classic Room booked and upgraded to an Executive Room w canal views.

I left the Pulitzer and moved to Hiltons for my next two stays (in BUD and IST) and I can say I think I like SPG much more.

How do I go about getting an upgrade? Do you have to ask? If so, should you ask whether there are better rooms available and then say you're SPG or are they normally pretty good with giving away available rooms?

Anyone had upgrade experience at Westin KL?

Not sure - I hadn't used SPG Gold before but when I checked in at Macau they just told me I was upgraded when they gave me the room key.

Hotel: Sheraton Mirage Resort Port Douglas
Booked: King Size Garden View Room and Twin Garden View Room ($165/night each) - included breakfast and 2 for 1 dinners
Room Given: King Size and Twin Lagoon Balcony Rooms.
Amenities: Letter from GM, 2 bottles of water daily in room.

I can't help but feel this resort is dying - the buildings are starting to get concrete cancer, all the great people that gave me great service a year ago have gone, and the decor is so incredibly 80s. It's pleasant, but there were so few people there that even buffet breakfasts in the Lagoon Restaurant were not well frequented. Previously I've been fighting for seats at breakfast - now it seems to be very quiet. It was a pleasant stay, but when we had previously stayed here it was a 5 star experience - now we would struggle to say that it was a 4 star experience. Everything had decreased in quality. Which is a pity.

In my experience the upgrade is automatic and specifically they mention at check-in that because you're SPG Gold, they've upgraded the rooms.

I've stayed here a few times - and the process has been simple - rock up to front desk, lots of typing, followed by - ".. we've upgraded you to...."

I've stayed at both Sheraton Imperial, and Westin in KL - and can say I like the Westin better. It has a 'newish' feel, and is closer to a lot of amenities (shops, local dining options). Feels to be a bit more happening.

Sheraton had a much nicer pool though.

Firstly, you need to have booked your room via SPG or their affiliated sites to be eligible for any elite status benefits. So booking on Expedia for example, per the program, would make you ineligible for any status benefits. Secondly, as long as your profile/member number is on the booking and you are Gold, then the hotel would be aware of your status. Thirdly, the hotel is pro-active with upgrades however as a Gold the best I am thinking of, is a Executive Floor room and with a view of the Towers. Be happy with a tower view room though. Fourthly, if you have the iPhone/iPad SPG app, then you can check your reservation prior to arrival to see if they upgraded you ie your room details would change. For some reason, the room changes aren't viewable on the desktop, however via the app it works. Fifthly, no matter what room you get, kindly enquire at check-in, along the lines "I am a Gold member, is there any chance of a nice upgrade?" and don't forget to smile
