I'm trying to max out a done4 so i can get to PG for when the family does its y one at Christmas

I'm at about 1500 with my current plan after about 20 attempts and am after any hints about the cities

I have 3 cities i have to get to from Syd

Houston
Capetown and
Colombo

This is it so far
syd-lax-mia-iah-lhr-hel-arn-lhr-cpt-jnb-hkg-bkk-cmb-sin-tyo-syd

Basic questions

Max credits for the europe leg?
Best way to houston?
I think ive just about got CPT -cmb-syd maxed out

Any suggestions or obviously glaring anomalies?

To maximise.

Must have 6 US segments (as book and get credits for first class) to maximise points

Fly the long in outs
eg. SYD-JFK, LAX-LHR

think HKG-DEL is best in Asia
If you are travelling in the right months (May-Sep) DFW-ANC is a big earner

I'm sure the experts will chime in soon, but I believe if you're starting in SYD and wanting to get to CPT, you will need to do a DONE5 not 4.

Correct. As planned it is a DONE5
Aus, US, Europe, Africa, Asia

LHR-DXB-LHR is also a good one.

I wont look it up till tomorrow but about the best you can get on the 16 segments without ANC is 1960 visiting just normal cities, so add in a few extra flights you should make PG.

Dont forget though that LHR-DXB-LHR hits you for a second APD of GBP80 ish

Good point - I don't think it does apply if transiting only. However it would be a mammoth task to fly LAX-LHR-DXB-LHR...

If booking with QF, do consider ( especially if going to get hit with costs such as GBP80 UK APD ) whether , rather than flying for the sake of it, whether you may end up being better off just buying a partner QF Club membership rather than paying the extra fuel fines

PG is more useful than QP when doing a LONEx. Especially when it costs up to $435 for a new one year partner membership.

Secondly, one gets access with a guest at all oneworld J lounges, not just those of AA, QF and BA.

Thirdly, the status bonus for a PG on a LONEx can be significant.

Finally, the additional flying to get to PG can earn quite few more QFF points in it's own right.

Is the status credits you mention in economy? If so, according to the One World website the DONE5 would cost $4,299 +tax

Is it really worth it to just get credits so you get free WP or PG status??

A DONEx is by definition, a Business class fare as it generally books into D class.

An economy oneworld explorer can be referred to as a LONEx as it books into L class.

The current base cost of a DONE5 ex Oz $12,599 ...

Correction noted, but the question remains, possibly even more so now...

"Is it really worth it.............??"

Only the OP can answer that question:
I'm trying to max out a done4 so i can get to PG for when the family does its y one at Christmas ...
If they are not paying for the DONE5 itself and the OP is prepared to undertake the additional travel then it may well be worth it to him.

Anyway, here's an 1840 SC routing:

And the answers are

Not paying for the DONE5 (thank you all for the correction but if i could have got IAH-CPT direct it would have been 4)

Am paying for the LONE 4 with wife and 17 . 15 and 13 year old delinquents.

We have had the discussions before on here as to if platinum is really worth it when you live in Wagga and only fly overseas once or twice a year and the answer in general was no (but i do like the sydney F lounge a lot)!

Is partner Gold worth it when i have that many people to try and slide into a lounge?
Definitely!
Will my wife get value out of her PG apart from this trip?
Probably not but the aim of it is to get it for the RTW trip not occasional WGA syd trips.
And the likelihood of us getting that J upgrade on the A380 LAX syd after the rest in economy can only be improved! (well thats for me and my wife, teh delinquents still have a long haul economy apprenticeship to serve!)

Thanks for the advice all
I did look at LHR Dxb but the flights were a bit tight and i did it last year. Its a LONG way LAX-LHR DXB but teh jumeraih had teh best mattress and pillows ive ever slept with!.
I've never been to Helsinki so thats why it won
Colombo is just a nightmare to get to from anywhere

I'll let you know what i end up with
It will take at least 3 months for the powers that be to approve it anyway!
