So in January myself, my wife and our little 3.5 yr old boy went to South Africa on an amazing trip. We flew from Melbourne to Joburg in VA business class. For the past few flights we've always sat in the middle section of row 4 (my wife likes it) but this time we were in row 3 and row 4 was empty.

After take off I noticed a young man seated in the middle section of row 4. It quickly became apparent that he was a partner of one of the flight crew who got a lucky upgrade. At this point as far as I was concerned he was just another lucky flyer and good on him.

However, after the meal service it was quite quiet, most were asleep, and when I stood up I noticed that the flight attendant was kneeling in front of the guy and being somewhat amorous. They weren't making out but I was surprised to see any kind of touching and kissing going on. To be fair, the young man was not doing much and even looked a bit embarrased.

Now when I stood up to get something out of the overhead she looked up at me and then turned back and kept on canoodling (for wont of a better word).

I was pretty surprised as it seemed quite unprofessional behaviour, especially in business class. I considered talking to the purser or supervisor but declined, mostly because I had a few wines with the meal and I never like to have any sort of confrontation when I've been drinking (though I certainly wasn't drunk). I thought about talking to her at the end of the flight but didn't bother. I also thought about writing a letter (which I suppose I still could) but also didn't bother.

I should also point out that our return trip was absolutely perfect thatnks entirely to the flight attendant on that flight. I am planning on writing a letter about her shortly.

So what would you have done?

I presume she was his partner.I would do nothing.Mrsdrron's look though would have made her aware that the behaviour was not appreciated.

I agree, it's unusual behaviour and very unprofessional.
But unless it affected you personally, I would do nothing about it. If the worst it made it you feel was slightly uncomfortable (and reading your post, I'd say that was it) then it's probably not worth bothering about. It's not like you experienced outright rude service.
Of course if the gent was just a normal passenger and not the FA's partner, then I'd say I'd be writing a letter of thanks if I was the gent in question:lol:

Do nothing, the plane didn't crash, you didn't miss your meals. Wait until you have some missing bags or no food before stressing out about things.....:)

Hey, I think we may have discovered some of the "Enhancements" on the new Business Class. Maybe she was getting ready for the "exciting release" of the new product.:lol: Personally cannot wait to try these new "features"
:):lol::lol:

I think you've been watching too many "Carry On" movies!!! Gave me a laugh, nonetheless.

I agree with above; don't bother with that one. However, as a pax, "this one time at band camp ....."

Interesting post. I feel as though I have heard this story a number of times.. Part of me thinks there is some fabrication going on (by someone... not necessarily the OP) in order to have Virgin and sex associated as much as possible...

Or maybe I'm just crazy :p

If it has taken since Jan to get this organised to ask a forum of strangers for advice I would just let it die and get on with your normal life.

This is an unusual one. Doesn't VA turn the lights out in J?

What is the age of a CSM/Purser on VA flights?

I love the snark on these boards! It's hard to tell if these are real travellers or just kids snarking from their mother's basements...:)

In any event, I opened this thread to ask "What would you do?" I recently joined this board and had an odd experience earlier this year which I thought some of the members from this board would like to comment on.

As I said, I did nothing, but I certainly think it was completely inappropriate behaviour from the flight crew. Can you imagine anyone in F or J on Singapore or Emirates flight crew acting that way?

I'd be inclined to write in and complain that I hadn't received the same service

Although an on duty staff member probably shouldn't be behaving that way.

If it was me I would first think about the potential outcome of a complaint. Worse case = FA sacked, can't pay bills, loses house & CSM gets a written warning for not supervising staff. I would then ask myself if I was put out enough to warrant that outcome. would I want to effect those other people that much?

Generally the answer would be no and therefore I rarely complain about staff doing personal things, that don't impact me directly, in between providing the standard level of service. (i.e. the service isn't reduced/ non existent)

I do personal things at work, like read this forum  , at 30.000 feet you can't read this forum so would have to find something else to do. Good luck to them.

I'm glad I don't have a job where everyone sees me and observes me during all my work hours especially some of the people here. :D

Matt

Very unprofessional. Reportable? Yes. Would I do it? Very unlikely.

An interesting flight to say the least!

Please take some of the comments on this forum with a pinch of salt.

I'm probably a bit more upfront than most.... I would have said something on the flight, to the FA involved.

If your wife or child had seen it going on and had been upset/offended then I would have encouraged you to write and complain.

It was completely inappropriate behavior but as it turned out, it was only you who saw it so I'd leave it alone.

Welcome to AFF too!! Trust me, the welcome here, is nowhere near as friendly as the one your fellow VA pax received! :-)
